Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans and prepares prayerful music for parish liturgies appropriate for the Mass and the season or special liturgy.
  • Play, accompany, and direct liturgical music for all Sundays, Holy Days, and other special liturgies.
  • Directs and administers the activities within the Music Ministry.
  • Directs and supervises the assistant accompanists, as applicable.
  • Appropriately delegates tasks and activities to volunteers.
  • Schedules cantors for each Sunday Mass, Holy Day Mass, and other liturgical celebrations as needed.
  • Holds weekly rehearsals for choir.
  • Coordinates all volunteer musicians and ensures quality of musical performance during Masses.
  • Recruits, coordinates, and oversees the rehearsal and scheduling of all music ministries: choirs, cantors, and accompanists.
  • Collaborates with the School Music Teacher and parish ministry leaders in preparing liturgies for their events.
  • Serves as a resource on musical and liturgical matters for the Parish.
  • Ensures all liturgies requiring music and singing are appropriately staffed.
  • Holds training and development workshops for cantors, singers, and musicians.
  • Meets with engaged couples to plan music for wedding liturgies. (Extra Stipend)
  • Plays for funeral liturgies. (Extra Stipend)
  • Adheres to all Diocesan and Parish policies for purchase/payment approval requests for all music ministry needs.
  • Administers and coordinates the operation, maintenance and repair of the musical instruments and equipment as needed.
  • Ensures that all licensing and copyright regulations are followed.
  • Oversees and maintains Parish Music Library, including hymnals, digital media and on-line library of all available music for all ministries.
  • Arranges for special volunteer musicians and/or paid instrumentalists for special liturgies.
  • Attends Parish Staff meetings.
  • Participates in appropriate diocesan meetings, programs and activities.
  • Develops and maintains personal music skills through training, self-study and continuing education opportunities.
  • Maintains and updates a roster of technology volunteers to administer the slide presentations during Mass.
  • Trains technology volunteers to administer the slide presentations during Mass.

Qualifications

  • A prayerful person of faith committed to personal and professional growth, with extensive knowledge in and love for Catholic liturgy.
  • Faithfully adheres to the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Music or a related field required, or comparable credentials.
  • Proficient on piano and organ.
  • Experienced in choral conducting and development.
  • Experience with musical instrumentation, preferably with music writing and composition.
  • Familiarity with music technology; including sound systems, digital scores, live-stream, recording.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to direct/supervise the music ministry team: assistants, cantors, choirs, and accompanists.
  • Broad musical knowledge of styles including standard & modern Catholic music, traditional hymns, and Praise and Worship style of music.
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office, Publisher, Music writing/editing software).
  • 5+ years’ work experience preferred.

Language Skills

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, vendors, employees, and the public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
