Description

Position Title: Writer and Editor.

Department: Marketing and Communications.

Classification: Exempt.

FTE: 1.0.

Work Schedule: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

Salary Range: $45,000 - $50,000.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Writing, Editing, Proofreading, and Content Development
  2. Write stories that highlight the people, programs, and places that make up the fabric of the St. Olaf community.
  3. Write and edit short-form content for our weekly employee and student newsletters.
  4. Proofread news stories, press releases, social posts, new and existing web pages, and other copy for grammar, style, and consistency.
  5. Review and edit copy for internal and external stakeholders to ensure clarity, accuracy, and adherence to college editorial standards.
  6. Develop and maintain editorial calendars for campus-wide and targeted communications in partnership with other departments, offices, and college leaders.
  7. Oversee a team of student writers who assist with stories and content. Provide mentorship and edit their work.
  8. In collaboration with the Director of Editorial and Director of Public Relations, help ensure that internal and external communication strategies and messages are aligned.
  9. Work with appropriate campus partners to facilitate the distribution of content for parents, faculty, staff, and students through newsletters or news digests.
  10. Manage the utilization and optimization of our e-newsletters. Provide analytics and recommendations to increase engagement with content.
  11. Consistently develop, review, and refine content through an unbiased lens and apply established best practices and standards for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  12. Collaborate on key college projects and initiatives as assigned.
  13. College Calendar
  14. Oversee the public-facing College Calendar, including working with campus partners to draft, edit, and publish events.
  15. Collaborate with the Events Team and campus partners to ensure information is accurate and updated as needed.
  16. Partner with the Social Media Strategist and Director of Editorial on promoting events.
  17. Email Management
  18. Monitor the Marketing and Communications and newsletter inboxes.
  19. Respond to and manage requests for the college and forward to colleagues as appropriate.
  20. Build and maintain strong partnerships with colleagues across campus, as well as alumni, parents, and friends of the college.
  21. Support, respect, and commit to embracing diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view to build a strong and inclusive community.
  22. Complete and meet deadlines for required training and performance management cycle.
  23. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Education: Bachelor's degree.
  2. Experience: 3+ years of professional experience in communications or related fields.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Education: Bachelor's degree in communications, English, journalism, marketing, and/or related fields.
  2. Experience: 5+ years of professional writing and/or editing experience in communications, journalism, marketing, or related fields; experience with email newsletters; experience with WordPress and/or other website platforms.

  1. Strong organizational, analytical, and writing skills.
  2. Experience writing stories and creating original content.
  3. Knowledge of AP Style and Chicago Manual of Style, and excellent copy-editing skills.
  4. An aptitude for creative content development.

  6. Strong project management skills.
  7. Ability to think strategically and proactively suggest creative solutions.
  8. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  9. Ability to build partnerships and effectively establish and maintain relationships with campus partners.
  10. Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  11. Ability and willingness to support, respect, and commit to embracing diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view to build a strong and inclusive community.
  12. Communicate professionally with colleagues, campus partners, and constituents at all times.
  13. Ability to work outside regular business hours when needed to effectively support the team's efforts.

Prerequisites:

Employment in this position is conditioned upon successful completion of a background check which may include: criminal background checks, reference checks, verification of work history, verification of any required academic credentials, licenses, and/or certifications, a motor vehicle check, verification of DOT certification, a credit check, employment eligibility verification, and/or a pre-employment physical. Whether a background check is deemed successfully completed will be at the sole discretion of St. Olaf College.
