The position requires working closely with editors, interactive staff, multimedia and reporters to coordinate and edit photo and video content for numerous sections of Newsday’s print and digital editions. A background with photo editing is preferred. Responsibilities include setting up still and video assignments, keeping track of daily developments and responding to situations as they arise. The candidate must have a strong photographic and multimedia background. Fluent knowledge of Adobe Premiere, Photoshop and image management systems are required. These jobs require organized, self-starters who can assign and supervise visual journalists. Flexibility, creativity, and the ability to work under tight deadlines as part of a team are a must for this job.
Essential Duties & Functions
- Initiate, develop and pursue news, feature and sports photographs upon assignment with the highest level of skill, reliability, professionalism and judgment
- Understand what to look for and how to explain video assignment to photographers and videographers.
- Assign staff and hire freelancers to shoot images for print and the web.
- Work within the department budget guidelines.
- Responsible for providing excellent service to customers within Newsday and to readers, advertisers and the Community through their regular job duties
- Be an active member of the Newsday editorial team; provide the best newspaper possible.
- Provide direction, feedback and performance reviews to staff photographers and assistant photo editors.
Essential Job Knowledge & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in photography, visual arts or related digital media required.
- A minimum of 3 - 5 years of experience in photo assigning and editing experience required, preferably in a newspaper.
- Mastery of all aspects of contemporary newspaper photojournalism and multi-media work needed.
- The incumbent must be able to work as part of a team and must be able to meet tight deadlines.
- Must excel at telling stories though images and is able to help edit the work of other photographers.
- Have outstanding multi-media skills; able to handle any news situation with appropriate judgment and independent action; work with minimal supervision.
- Must have strong coaching skills and be able to prioritize and multi-task.
Compensation
- The annual salary for this role is $100,000.
Physical Requirements
- Employees are generally required to work in the office and/or out in the field 5 days per week.
