Responsible for teaching various classes/levels in middle and upper school, maintaining and enhancing the tradition of student interest in and passion for music and the performing arts. The instrumental music teacher/director will work closely with faculty and administrators to provide high-quality performing arts events throughout the school year, including being the musical co-director of theatrical productions.

Responsibilities

  • Teach middle and upper school instrumental music classes and ensembles, and upper school music classes, including AP Music Theory.
  • Act as Music Director for the upper school musical.
  • Provide individual and small group instruction to students for musical instrument development and performance preparation.
  • Plan, organize, and execute major instrumental performances throughout the year.
  • Coordinate participation in regional and state performance assessments; mentor students for solo or ensemble contests and auditions.
  • Instruct a wide variety of styles of music – contemporary, traditional, and modern instrumental works.
  • Act as a positive role model and support the values of the School. Plan and implement instructional programs and activities that further the philosophy, mission, and goals of Saint Edward’s School, ensuring that the classroom atmosphere fosters knowledge, moral development, emotional development, and leadership skills.
  • Act as an advisor and advocate for all students, particularly for a finite group assigned to you.
  • Choose and organize instructional materials, adapting methods and materials to accommodate learner differences, and plan for both long-term and short-term instructional goals.
  • Effectively assess student learning and employ responsive teaching practices.
  • Practice classroom management that is cognitively appropriate for middle school students, creating an environment conducive to learning, establishing and maintaining appropriate student behavior, and demonstrating conflict resolution skills.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with school administration, fellow faculty members, parents, and students, providing frequent and specific feedback.
  • Participate in professional development, demonstrating commitment to improving educational skills and knowledge, and take a leadership role in improving education while modeling life-long learning to students and colleagues.
  • Implement best practices that develop research, reading, and writing skills, as well as information literacy and digital citizenship.
  • Sponsor, lead, or participate in co-curricular and/or extracurricular student programs, including trip planning and chaperoning.
  • Perform all duties as outlined in the Employee/Faculty Handbook and in their professional contract.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possess in-depth knowledge of choral techniques and skills, relevant teaching experience, a student-centered approach, and a passion for working with students.
  • Must hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Secondary teachers shall have a minimum of 24 credit hours from an accredited college or university in their major teaching field.
  • Classroom experience preferred.
  • Must be able to function in a technology-rich classroom.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Works in a stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a diverse array of contacts.
  • May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
  • Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled classroom environment.
  • Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
