This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City’s collective bargaining agreement with AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) – BARGAINING UNITS 1, 3, 4 & 5. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Supervises and provides direction to a team of public relations professionals (PR Rep II) managing media relations, social media, email marketing and advertising.
- Develops and maintains relationships with local and national media outlets to secure press coverage.
- Plans and supervises the preparation of news articles, press releases and media advisories.
- Pitches stories to journalists, bloggers and influencers to enhance the library’s visibility.
- Organizes and supports press conferences, media events and interviews.
- Organizes and manages the development and execution of social media campaigns to enhance audience engagement.
- Develops content strategies that align with brand messaging and audience interests.
- Tracks and analyzes media coverage and campaign performance to measure impact.
LOCATION: 400 S. State St. -Chicago Public Library
DAYS OFF: Saturday and Sunday
SHIFT: Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 4:00 pm or 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
HOURS: 37.5 hours per week to be scheduled during normal unit hours
THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, Communications, English or a directly related field, plus three years of experience in the preparation and dissemination of public information; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a skills assessment as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.
Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
- Experience managing internal communications
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications
- Bi-lingual in Spanish
- Experience working in a library, government or non-profit organizations
