Job Duties
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts seeks an enthusiastic individual with teaching experience to join our Youth & Family Studio Programs team. The Youth Studio Technician position will support programs by assisting with the daily operations of summer camps, supervising students, and helping to maintain safe and organized art studios, as well as assisting with programs throughout the school year.
Responsibilities of this position include:
- Summer Camp Commitment & Assistance: Work Mon–Fri, up to 39 hours per week during summer camp prep and programming (June 23–August 15, 2025). Full availability is required.
- Connect-a-Camp Facilitation: Plan and lead daily Connect-a-Camp sessions, including writing lesson plans, prepping supplies, teaching, and supervising students between their primary camps.
- Studio Organization & Maintenance: Maintain clean, safe, and well-organized art studios, storage areas, and supplies year-round. Assist with inventory, supply orders, and material prep for classes. This role requires the ability to regularly move furniture, lift heavy supply bins, and transport materials.
- Class Assistance (Sept–May): Support afterschool and weekend classes during the school year. Hours vary, with fewer in winter and increasing toward summer.
- Program & Instructor Support: Assist program coordinator and other staff and faculty, as needed. Provide support to instructors by helping to gather and reserve supplies and assisting with classes.
- Technology & A/V Setup: Oversee A/V, computer lab, and tech needs for camps and classes, including setting up laptops, connecting to projectors, and troubleshooting issues.
- Student Exhibitions: Assist by collecting student art, documenting works, writing labels, framing, and installation.
- Administrative Support: Complete tasks such as collecting survey data and statistics, organizing student forms, corresponding with program inquiries, and reviewing website updates.
- Professionalism & Accountability: Clock hours accurately and manage time wisely; ensure all tasks meet program standards; check emails regularly and respond promptly.
- Initiative & Problem-Solving: Stay proactive in improving studio spaces and program efficiency. Identify areas for enhancement and take initiative.
- Clear & Regular Communication: Keep supervisors informed of any needs, scheduling changes, or concerns.
Minimum Qualifications
- Summer Availability: Must be available Monday–Friday (up to 39 hours per week) from June 23–August 15, 2025, specifically during camp weeks. Full availability is required.
- Flexible Schedule: Ability to work evenings and weekends during the school year (September–May) as needed; hours range 0–25 per week, increasing as summer approaches.
- Experience working with Children: Previous experience supervising or teaching children in a professional setting, with the ability to engage diverse age groups and backgrounds.
- Art Studio Experience: Experience maintaining an art studio and handling a wide range of art materials, tools, and equipment.
- Art & Museum Knowledge: Understanding of studio art disciplines, art history, and/or museum education practices for youth audiences.
- Physical Stamina & Readiness: Comfortable performing physical tasks, including lifting items up to 50 lbs, moving heavy objects, standing for extended periods, and supervising children outdoors (up to one hour in summer heat).
- Highly Organized & Self-Motivated: Ability to maintain clean and organized workspaces, manage time effectively, and take initiative in a fast-paced environment.
- Reliable Transportation: Must have a dependable means of transportation to and from the museum.
Additional Considerations
- Relevant Education & Training: Completed coursework or equivalent experience in education, museum studies, child development, art history, or related fields.
- Previous Summer Camp Experience: Experience working with a program similar to VMFA Summer Art Adventures.
- Experience with Diverse Learners: Familiarity with teaching children who are neurodivergent or have differing levels of skill, needs, and learning styles.
- Certifications & Credentials:
First Aid & CPR Certification (or willingness to obtain).
Virginia Teaching License (or equivalent teaching credentials).
