JOB SUMMARY

Employment Type: Non-Exempt (hourly). Full-Time

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily:

  • Coordinates and executes children's programs and initiatives that engage young readers, foster literacy, and encourage learning and exploration for children of various ages.
  • Evaluates program effectiveness by tracking participation, gathering feedback, and using statistical data to prepare reports for library management and stakeholders.
  • Processes, creates, and edits bibliographic and item records for children's books, media, and other youth-related resources in the library catalog.
  • Assists with the development of youth collections, ensuring materials are appropriate, up-to-date, and reflective of diverse topics and age ranges for children.
  • Provides reference and technology assistance to children and their families, helping them find resources and navigate library systems.
  • Develops and delivers educational programming for children, including storytimes, craft activities, and literacy-building exercises.
  • Serves on library committees and may occasionally serve as the chairperson, focusing on youth services and children's programming initiatives.
  • Handles opening and closing duties for the library, including managing money, completing daily cash reports, and ensuring the safety and readiness of children's areas.
  • Manages the collection management process for children’s materials, ensuring their upkeep, relevancy, and alignment with library goals for youth literacy and development.
  • Acts as a proficient reader advisor for children, guiding young patrons and their families to appropriate resources for their age and developmental stage.
  • Adheres to the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement, and Freedom to View Statement, ensuring children’s access to a diverse range of materials.
  • Follows all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and the custodianship of patron records, especially those concerning minors.
  • Other duties as assigned related to the library's children’s services and community engagement efforts.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training and/or work experience required.

  • MLS or MLIS degree required
  • Experience working in children's services in a library setting preferred
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of online library databases and youth-focused library services
  • Strong customer service skills, particularly in working with children and families
  • Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekdays, evenings, and weekends

PHYSICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Must be able to move from place to place within the location
  • Lift, push, pull, items weighing up to 25 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 35 pounds (e.g., files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials)
  • Ability to sit for long durations
  • Maintain concentration on tasks such as computer screens or detailed paperwork
