W. W. Norton & Company, Inc. is seeking a Sales Assistant to support the Trade Sales team, reporting to the VP, Associate Director, Trade Sales. This newly created role will assist with the department’s day-to-day operations as well as help plan and execute sales-led initiatives including biweekly sales marketing meetings, client publisher events, and industry conferences. The ideal candidate is self-motivated with strong organizational skills with an ability to prioritize and manage deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.

In addition, this person will work closely with the Trade Sales Operations team. You will become an expert in both Norton’s internal reporting systems and industry-wide POS systems in support of the sales team. This is an excellent opportunity for a curious person looking to flex their analytical muscles and learn about the book publishing business.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Support in an administrative capacity the day-to-day functions of the sales team at the discretion of the Associate Director.
  • Perform general office duties, including assisting with scheduling, meeting preparation, follow-up notes, processing invoices, and sales material development and distribution across all sales channels with a focus to independent bookstores, educational wholesalers, and mass merchandizers.
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance relationships with sales team and other internal trade departments including editorial, publicity, marketing, production, and our warehouse, National Book Company.
  • Extract and analyze data from multiple sources (including marketplace data, internal sales, etc.), and synthesize outputs into a cohesive narrative.
  • Generate, maintain and distribute weekly sales reporting.
  • Coordinates booth setup and materials for, as well as occasional attendance at national trade shows, educational conferences, and library conventions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong written communication, with the ability to effectively communicate with colleagues across all levels and functions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (including v-lookups, pivot tables, text to column, etc.).
  • Demonstrates analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills—comfortable with both quantitative and qualitative data.
  • The ability to work on multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Employment eligibility to work with W.W. Norton & Company in the US is required.
  • Must be able to work full business hours from Norton’s NYC Headquarters.

  • Annual compensation for this role is $48,000. All salaries and salary ranges posted by Norton may vary depending on experience, skills, location, and like considerations.
