Position Summary:The Studio Manager & Curriculum Specialist provides oversight, maintenance, and supervision of the undergraduate and graduate printmaking departmental studio facilities including, but not limited to, letterpress, lithography, intaglio, screen print, papermaking, and publishing studio (i.e. Watershed). The Studio Manager provides instruction in these processes when appropriate and as directed by supervisors and print faculty. The studio manager works with faculty and students to implement curricular requirements of degree seeking students through coursework and independent projects with undergraduate and graduate students. The studio manager ensures the overall safety of the facility, supervises staff technicians and student workers, alumni volunteers and may teach or substitute teach courses at the request of the Dean.
The Studio Manager works collaboratively with the BFA/MFA Department Chairs of Printmaking and Print Media to envision growth, new materials and methods, as well as potential research that supports a contemporary creative practice. This includes assisting faculty in the development and delivery of instruction within the Print shops and Labs and in classrooms as necessary.
The Manager acts as the key Health and Safety Officer at the Print Studios and is the leader of all safety protocols and training for all print-related processes housed within the undergraduate and graduate printmaking programs. The Studio Manager maintains the day-to-day operations of the safe operation of presses, chemicals and all manual and computer-based print equipment. The Manager works with Facilities and the Chemical Hygiene Officer as needed in the management and disposal of hazardous materials.
The Studio Manager supervises, trains and schedules the Staff Technician (undergrad and grad) positions and student workers & alumni volunteer and works collaboratively with the Department Chairs, and faculty to provide a safe learning environment for Shop employees and workers. The Studio Manager oversees alumni and community volunteers who may work in the print studio.
The Studio Manager consults with the Department Chair and may teach associated courses that are related to their role leading the shops.
Strong communication and supervisory skills are required as well as expertise in one or more printmaking areas and some skills and knowledge for all Studio areas.
The Studio Manager coordinates departmental budget, conducts supply orders and may repair equipment as needed and manages other financial matters in the department such as point of sale processing.
The Studio Manager conducts tours and hosts special events as needed for Enrollment/Admissions, Advancement and Alumni & Family Affairs.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesMaintains safe, clean and organized shop and workspace environments.
Communicate effectively and professionally with campus community in writing and orally.
Maintain, develop and prepare/facilitate all printmaking studios for departmental and non departmental classes and events with faculty and staff and visiting artists.
Keeps an inventory and back stock of needed supplies and tools based on faculty syllabi and timely requests.
In collaboration with the BFA/MFA program Chairs, oversees budget and anticipates, plans and develops needs assessment with faculty leaders and the Dean's Office.
Develops a schedule of regular equipment maintenance, replacement and repair.
Conducts equipment maintenance, replacement, and repair, finding resources as needed, in collaboration with any necessary experts.
Develops a culture of safety, shared responsibility for studio maintenance, use of safety equipment and knowledge of materials and their potential for long/short term disease, toxicity or physical consequences.
Supervises shop use during open lab times.
Hires, supervises and schedules shop workers-part-time staff and students and alumni volunteers.
Coordinates work with external partners through Watershed Press.
Provides class demonstrations and assists in individual projects and general problem solving within the facility.
Develops and manages equipment use schedule and revenue recapture (manage Square/P-card reader).
Manages departmental expenses and supplies.
Performs maintenance duties such as cleaning, safe waste disposal, material restock and related tasks.
Supervises student projects such as independent studies and thesis mentorship.
May teach classes or workshops, as an ongoing or substitute teacher, as approved by the department Chair or Dean.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
2-3 years of experience with applicable Printmaking processes, materials, equipment and tools including work in a commercial, academic or community print studio or shop.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license or certification.
Strong interpersonal communication and management skills.
Ability to give and receive direction and communicate effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty and staff.
Proactive, self-motivated, energetic, problem solving and aware of various learning styles and modes of critical thinking.
Strong aptitude for equipment maintenance and repair.
Excellent supervisory and organizational skills.
Understanding of institutional/industrial health and safety issues and developing policies, protocols and procedures.
Basic office management, budget administration skills.
Commitment to creating and supporting a positive, collaborative and creative community within the Studio and at PNCA.
Knowledge and interest in new, emerging and traditional technologies that support the Studios and expand creative explorations for the PNCA community.
Computer competency in Google Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous community based or university teaching experience in Printmaking.
MFA
Valid driver's license (within 30 days of hire).
Computer competency in Canvas and some experience with Adobe Creative Suite, 3D rendering software and CAD programs.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
This is an in-person job; no remote work is available for this position. May require weekend hours, early morning or evening hours, or other flexible scheduling related to courses and other print-related special events and school events.
Ability to reside in Oregon by the first day of employment or otherwise perform work primarily in Oregon.
Ability to lift 40 pounds.
Salary: $53,040
