The Acquisitions Librarian is responsible for the procurement and management of library resources in all formats, including print, electronic, multimedia, and serials. This position works collaboratively with faculty, librarians, and vendors to support academic programs and research needs by ensuring timely, cost-effective, and accurate acquisitions. The Acquisitions Librarian plays a key role in budget monitoring, vendor relations, licensing, and collection development support.
Responsibilities
- Manage the acquisition of library materials through purchase, subscription, gift, or licensing in all formats.
- Ensure orders are properly documented, tracked, and received using the integrated library system (ILS) and/or acquisitions modules.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with library material vendors, publishers, and consortia.
- Negotiate pricing, discounts, and licensing terms for new and continuing resources.
- Monitor expenditures and assist with managing the acquisitions budget in coordination with the library administration.
- Oversee the invoicing, receiving, and processing of materials, ensuring accurate metadata and order records.
- Collaborate with cataloging staff to ensure smooth transition of items from acquisition to circulation.
- Work with the Electronic Resources Librarian or IT staff to coordinate access, authentication, and linking of digital materials.
- Review and manage licenses and agreements for compliance and usage terms.
- Develop and document acquisitions policies, workflows, and procedures.
- Provide training to staff and student assistants involved in acquisitions-related tasks.
- Generate reports and analyze data on acquisitions activities, collection usage, and budget status.
- Participate in library planning, assessment, and accreditation support as needed.
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited institution.
- At least 2 years of experience in acquisitions, collection development, or technical services in an academic library.
- Must be able to lift 10 pounds.
