Description of the Department or Unit
Appalachian State University Libraries are essential teaching and research partners, inspiring and guiding all who pursue knowledge. The University Libraries welcome nearly 800,000 visitors every year. We connect with the students, faculty, and staff of Appalachian State University as well as community members, researchers from all over the world, and K-12 school teachers. A large and vibrant organization composed of 35 faculty and 50 staff, the Libraries are a partner in the campus learning community, providing curated collections, a curriculum focused on information literacy and research methods, and engaging spaces and services centered around new media and technology, digital scholarship, and community engagement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Research Assistance and Public Services
- Oversee the operations of Public Services in the Special Collections Research Center (SCRC), including developing and documenting policies and procedures for the use and security of the collections, with a focus on manuscripts, archives, and rare books, in consultation with the coordinator.
- Provide research consultations and reference assistance about the SCRC manuscripts, archives, and rare books for the Appalachian State University community and the wider research community.
- Staff the SCRC public services desk as needed.
- Monitor research and instruction needs to identify areas to strengthen collections.
- Measure and analyze the use of services and collections through statistics, user surveys, and/or other appropriate methods and data.
- Create and edit content for SCRC webpages.
Instruction
- Participate in the University Libraries’ instruction and information literacy program and collaborate with SCRC curators on instructional efforts for the SCRC with a focus on manuscripts, rare books, and archives. Instruction includes teaching class sessions, consultations, orientations, tours, and workshops.
- Develop and maintain library research guides and digital tools related to the collections of the SCRC.
Liaison Areas and Outreach
- Develop and engage in outreach activities for the SCRC, including creating physical and digital content, exhibits, and related projects, developing and hosting events related to the collections, creating instructional and promotional materials.
- Collaborate with team members to develop, implement, and maintain a research fellowship program to serve scholarly and student researchers.
Other
- Stay current on trends and developments in the archives and rare book professions, especially special collections’ public services, instruction, and outreach, as well as research practices and trends among students and scholars.
- Other duties as assigned.
