The de Young showcases American art from the 17th through the 21st centuries, international contemporary art, textiles and costumes, and art from the Americas, the Pacific, and Africa. The Legion of Honor displays a collection of over 4,000 years of ancient and European art and houses the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts (AFGA). The staff, Board of Trustees, volunteers, and various support groups work together to ensure the optimal utilization, display, preservation, and enrichment of this magnificent collection.Role Description:The Fine Arts Museums seek a highly motivated and qualified professional to serve as the Curator, AFGA. Reporting to the Curator-in-Charge, AFGA, the Curator will plan and direct assigned activities of the Achenbach collection and supervise the activities of the curatorial team in the Department. This position works closely with the Curatorial Staff of other Curatorial Departments, as well as with the Exhibitions, Registration, Conservation and Technical Production staff; lenders; collectors; donors; trustees; dealers; and researchers.The essential duties and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:Identifies, classifies, researches and catalogues objects from the permanent collection; supervises the care and preservation of collection objects.Suggests, conceptualizes, plans, designs, and supervises the display of the museum's collections of works on paper.Produces high-level and inclusive scholarship in the field of works on paper.Monitors the art market and makes recommendations for acquisitions, accessioning and deaccessioning works from the permanent collection.Assists the fundraising and development efforts for the AFGA.Interprets the museum's collections and exhibitions in all fields.Corresponds and confers regularly with scholars, specialists, and the general public.Organizes, manages and supervises the work of the curatorial team.Develops, coordinates, and carries out policies and procedures relative to departmental activities.Minimum Qualifications:Education:
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in fine arts, art history, decorative arts, design, history, library science, museum studies, natural history, science, technology, or other closely related disciplines.Experience:
Five (5) years of museum experience.Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.Desirable Qualifications:Possession of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from an accredited college or university with major course work in art history.Knowledge of modern and contemporary prints and drawings.Experience working in a curatorial capacity in a fine arts museum.Knowledge of fine arts, art history, history of printmaking and drawing techniques, and museum studies.Experience in museum policies and procedures.Knowledge of museum exhibition methods and practices.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.Ability to communicate with tact and courtesy.Two (2) years of supervisory experience.How to Apply:Applications for City and County of San Francisco jobs are only accepted through an online process.
