Position Overview
The Reference & Instructional Services Librarian teaches an advanced legal research course, collaborates with colleagues to provide legal research instruction in other areas of the curriculum, and provides legal research instruction and reference assistance to law students, law faculty, the Marquette community, the legal community, and members of the public. Law librarians also collaborate on reference policies, collection development, assessment, and other programs, services, and resources. The rank of Adjunct Professor of Law is commensurate with experience.
Responsibilities
- Teach in the fall and spring semesters, including designing, developing, teaching, and assessing advanced legal research courses. Support other areas of the curriculum through legal research instruction and outreach, including collaboration with legal writing faculty in the first-year Legal Analysis, Writing, and Research curriculum.
- Participate in the weekly reference schedule, including occasional evening and weekend hours.
- Participate in the library liaison program, offering research support to faculty and research assistants.
- Develop and update research guides, bibliographies, or other instructional materials.
- Collaborate on collection development and related policies.
- Contribute to the development, evaluation, and implementation of law library goals, policies, procedures, services, and publications.
- Serve on law library, law school, and university committees as needed.
- Engage in the life of the Law School and participate in professional development activities.
Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
- M.L.I.S. (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited institution or current enrollment in such a program with degree completed within one year of hire.
- Knowledge of legal research methodology and bibliography in multiple formats.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, both oral and written.
- Flexibility and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong service orientation and ability to work with a diverse patron population.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience teaching legal research or information literacy.
- Experience providing research and reference services.
- Experience working in a law library or legal practice setting.
