Job Summary
Battelle is seeking a Lead Radio Frequency Engineer to work in the Electronic Warfare group within the National Security Division. The position is located at Battelle Headquarters in Columbus, OH.
The RF Engineer will be responsible for leading development of complex RF/microwave systems, for utilization in Communications and Electronic Warfare (EW) solutions. The applicant must have extensive experience in microwave design techniques, FPGA and embedded system development, radio signal processing, simulation tools, and microwave test equipment. This position will work closely with antenna engineers on state-of-the-art phased array antennas, requiring a solid foundational understanding of antenna design and phased array applications including Electronic Beam Steering (EBS) and Direction Finding (DF). A successful candidate will be capable of making technical presentations to peers, program leadership, and customers and assist in new business development.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership, subject matter expertise, and individual execution within engineering projects requiring design, prototyping, analysis, testing, fabrication, and integration of RF/microwave systems into multi-disciplinary engineering solutions.
- Mentor and train junior and mid-level engineers.
- Develop and mature engineering design processes.
- Coordinate with customers and sub-contractors.
- Lead the creation of technical content for proposals and white papers.
- Create technical documentation, test plans, and reports.
- Conduct experiments and testing in laboratory and field environments.
Key Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (EE) or related field + 10 years of experience, Master’s degree + 8 years, PhD + 5 years, or equivalent experience.
- Analysis, design, prototyping, and integration of microwave/RF systems, subsystems, and components.
- MATLAB modeling and analysis of RF channels, EBS patterns, and DSP systems.
- Design of RF/microwave PCB.
- ECAD experience with Cadence Virtuoso, Allegro, and Altium Designer.
- FPGA and embedded system development.
- Development of Software Defined Radio (SDR).
- Experience with microwave test equipment such as vector network analyzers, power meters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, noise sources, multimeters, and signal sources.
- Technical writing skills for proposals, white papers, test plans, and reports.
- Leadership experience managing technical teams of more than 3 members.
- Ability to obtain/maintain a government security clearance (Must be a US citizen).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with 3GPP 5GNR and O-RAN system design, integration, and testing.
- Experience with VITA-49 system design, integration, and testing.
- Familiarity with mobile cellular network equipment, deployment, and industry practices.
- Design, integration, and evaluation of Active Electronically Steered Antennas (AESAs).
- Experience with electromagnetic simulation tools such as HFSS, CST, ADS, Genesys, and AWR.
- Familiarity with military communication and EW equipment setup and operation.
- Current US Government Security Clearance.
