The Baltimore Banner is a nonprofit newsroom founded to bring high-quality local journalism to the Baltimore metro area. We are creating a vibrant, strong, trustworthy, and sustainable news organization, seeking to re-imagine the future of local news. Using a multi-platform news operation, covering a broad range of topics from local government to culture and the arts. We tell stories that reflect the community, connecting neighbors, holding government institutions accountable, and making sense of the world. All this work is grounded in truth. We believe we can contribute to a more vibrant, informed, and whole Baltimore, surrounding counties, and the state of Maryland.About the role:
The Baltimore Banner is hiring reporters to cover the most interesting news of the day in the counties surrounding Baltimore.
These reporters will be generalists covering institutions of high interest to readers - including the school system and county government - as well as real people from all walks of life. These reporters will cultivate a diverse network of sources that represent parents, retirees, immigrants, business owners and community advocates, among others, to inform their coverage. The ideal candidate is versatile, equally adept at writing breaking news and enterprise stories in a conversational tone that engages readers. We want to do more than tell readers what is happening in the news; we want to tell them what it means and how it affects them.
Our regional coverage is consistently among our most read, and these reporters' work will be integral to expanding The Banner's audience into the suburbs.Responsibilities:Write the news of the day quickly, with accuracy, context and sweepHave a keen eye for interesting storiesCultivate a diverse source network to inform story selectionUse and understand newsroom analytics to hone and identify coverage that serves readersCollaborate with reporters across the newsroomApproach the beat creatively and deliver stories in a variety of formsWork across social media platforms to connect readers with our contentGenerate new ideas for audience growthRepresent The Banner in the community as needed - in person or on television or radio appearances
Requirements:A minimum of 5 years of experience in journalismAbility to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environmentStrong writing skills and ability to quickly make complex topics understandableA strong instinct for newsDigital savvy and a familiarity with audience analyticsAbility to juggle breaking news with strong enterprise storiesEnthusiasm for news and content that will resonate with readersTeamwork and willingness to collaborate with othersStrong interpersonal skills and an ability to give and receive constructive feedbackWillingness to work some nights and weekends as news dictatesA commitment to upholding journalistic values and ethics
