The Director, Organizational Design & DEI plays a crucial role in shaping and advancing our organizational systems to meet the emerging needs of a global workforce and fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This role involves collaborating with internal stakeholders to design and implement effective organizational strategies that enable EDF to fulfill its mission of a vital Earth for everyone. By optimizing team structures, developing talent, and promoting inclusive decision-making, this position supports EDF's evolution as a leading environmental non-profit in a complex global landscape.The Director reports to the Chief Diversity Officer.Duration:
This is a two-year fixed-term position with the possibility of extension.
Key Responsibilities
In collaboration with senior leaders, lead the development and implementation of organizational design choices that enhance EDF’s position as a long-term sector leader in an increasingly complex ecosystem for environmental non-profits which centers change management best practices, including but not limited to:Making recommendations on how to adapt the existing matrix structure to improve its efficiency, coherence, and alignment with our mission.Assessing and optimizing of team structures across the organization, ensuring they are well-positioned to achieve organizational goals.Advancing succession planning and talent/career development opportunities for underrepresented groups.With the guidance of the Chief Diversity Officer, create, implement, and direct effective initiatives that support DEI at all levels of the organization and align with EDF’s priorities.Support the Chief Diversity Officer in developing and implementing a comprehensive DEI strategy aligned with the organization’s values and goals.Monitor, evaluate, and advance the organization’s capacity and systems of ongoing accountability for DEI progress.In collaboration with senior leaders, nurture the evolution of EDF’s approach to organizational strategy to better accommodate uncertainty, continuous learning, faster adaptability, and inclusive decision-making.Work cross-functionally and coach senior leaders to adopt a DEI lens for ongoing organizational change, enabling a positive and resilient culture that maximizes a global, hybrid workforce.Design and facilitate learning experiences for staff at all levels to operationalize EDF’s core value of DEI and embed its principles into systems, processes, routine workflows.Represent the DEI team professionally in cross-functional initiatives and steer them as appropriate, including advisory councils, committees, or special events.Mentor, coach, and provide technical support for team members and distinct internal groups, including but not limited to managers, regional/global staff, and cohorts of functional roles, that build internal capacity for solving relevant organizational challenges through ways of working that enable DEI.Regularly assess and report on initiative and project progress, using quantitative and qualitative methods to make data-driven recommendations for continuous improvement.Iterate and improve upon feedback loops between the edges of the organization (geography, tenure, functional area) and the centers of institutional power.Advance EDF’s diversity, equity, and inclusion goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.Additional relevant responsibilities as assigned.Qualifications
10+ years of relevant professional experience and a Bachelor’s degree required. The degree requirement may be waived altogether for a candidate who can successfully demonstrate commensurate professional experience along with excellence in their past roles.Proven experience in organizational design, change management, and implementation of effective strategies.Expert knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices and principles, with a track record of successful DEI program development and implementation required.Experience working with global non-profits is preferred.Demonstrated self-awareness, commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion with a high degree of cultural competency and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.Proactive and attentive to detail.Ability to adapt to shifting approaches or strategies, manage competing priorities, meet tight deadlines, and work well under pressure.Ability to handle complex issues with discretion and maintain confidentiality at all times.Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence leaders and tailor messages to different audiences and levels.Analytical mindset with strong strategic thinking, including the ability to uncover patterns and synthesize complex data to inform decision-making.Ability to work well independently as well as collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams across multiple time zones.Proficient in Microsoft Office and ability to use and learn other programs and systems as needed.Familiarity with global environmental issues and a passion for sustainability.Some scheduling flexibility to accommodate global collaboration and initiatives, as required.Willingness and ability to occasionally travel to conferences, workshops, and organizational events as necessary.We offer a strong total rewards package encompassing competitive salary, robust benefits, and professional development opportunities consistent with a modern global organization.
