Overview
The San Antonio Report, a nonprofit news outlet in the country’s seventh-largest city, is seeking a versatile and enterprising reporter to cover the public safety beat. The San Antonio Report offers competitive pay, full benefits and generous paid time off, and also embraces a collaborative work culture.
This beat includes coverage of major crimes, emerging public health concerns and the criminal justice system. Our public safety reporter focuses on the structures of policing and public safety in Bexar County — making sense of trends and major public safety concerns as well as governmental policy changes, investments and priorities.
We are looking for a reporter who can recognize nuance in crime coverage while going beyond the press release and one-off happenings to tell bigger stories about public safety in San Antonio that our readers want and need to know. This reporter will need to be comfortable cultivating sources within city and county departments, talking to government officials, crime victims and those who are accused of crimes.
The ideal candidate will be skilled at producing both spot news stories and longer, in-depth pieces as well as contributing to broader newsroom-wide reporting projects. This reporter may be asked to cover general assignments, at times, or to pitch in with occasional assignments off their beat. This beat is a unique opportunity for a savvy reporter to make it their own and help craft a coverage model that gives readers a better understanding of the public safety successes and challenges facing residents in San Antonio.
SKILL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong reporting skills, with specific experience covering breaking news, law enforcement, courts and criminal justice preferred.
- An understanding of documents that are public record and the ability to source documents and research to aid in reporting.
- Proven ability to write well-organized, accurate copy on tight deadlines while also conceiving and pursuing long-term projects or stories.
- Strong writing skills with proven ability to explain San Antonio’s unique challenges as it relates to public safety.
- Willingness to work closely with editors and other colleagues in shaping the best stories for our audience.
- Schedule flexibility (some nights, weekend work)
- Spanish proficiency is a plus.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field.
