Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The School of Medicine Information Technology (IT) Office provides centralized computer support and information system support for the School of Medicine community, from medical students to faculty to administrative staff. Services include central help desk and desktop support; administrative and clinical application support; novel application development and database hosting; research IT and data science initiatives; infrastructure services including physical, virtual, and cloud provisioning; physical networking installation and management; and web development. Additional services include managing the School of Medicine official web presence; classroom video recording and streaming systems; video production and editing; video conferencing; and digital signage.
Position Summary
The Application, Web & Data Services team within School of Medicine IT is responsible for the overall web presence for the School of Medicine, including over 400 websites hosted in WordPress. The Web Designer/Developer will use the latest web technologies (HTML5, CSS3, Javascript/jQuery, etc.) to develop solutions and provide support for SOM WordPress websites. This position will also be responsible for training users in best practices for using SOM websites, troubleshooting web issues, conducting research and testing new web technologies.
Provides technical and analytical work in support of developing, designing, and/or supporting applications that enhance the educational and research missions of the UNC School of Medicine. Gathers information, defines work requirements, and contributes to the development of program specifications.
This position analyzes applications, collaborates on solutions, applies upgrades, and develops and maintains documentation. Develop solutions that link technical knowledge with business solutions and may range from consulting services (e.g. software recommendations) to developing integrated systems.
Duties include client needs assessment as well as documentation of software requirements. Employees should be able to work independently with minimal supervision. May serve as analytical resource on maintaining established applications and assists with implementations and operational support.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Master's or Bachelors and 0-2 years' experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* Experience working with HTML/CSS and WordPress.* Must possess analytical skills, along with logical and critical thinking skills.* Able to communicate effectively with non-technical staff and with members of interdisciplinary teams.* Must have strong written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills* Solid troubleshooting skills.* Experience using Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.)* Willingness to learn and contribute both independently and as part of a team.* Self-motivated and able to balance competing priorities.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* Work experience coding with HTML and CSS.* Work experience with content management systems (e.g WordPress, Drupal, etc.)* Adobe Creative Suite experience.* UI/UX experience* Application-level testing.* Knowledge of operating systems such as Unix /Linux and Windows.* Familiarity with the Agile methodology.* Familiarity with web accessibility standards.* Ability to learn new software and technologies quickly.* Develop and update technical documentation.* Knowledge of one or more version control systems (GIT, SVN, TFS, etc.)
