To learn more about our organization, please visit our website at https://www.sfpuc.gov/.ABOUT THE SFPUC’S EXTERNAL AFFAIRS BUREAUUnder the leadership of the Assistant General Manager, the External Affairs Bureau is responsible for disseminating the policies and programs of our agency to stakeholder groups including our commissioners, elected officials, the media, businesses, community organizations, residents, and employees. We advocate on behalf of the agency by conveying the core messages of the agency clearly and engaging through a timely and transparent process.External Affairs is supported by and organized into the following major divisions:Community Benefits (CB)Communications (COMM)Policy and Government Affairs (PGA)Strategy, Planning, and Innovation (SPI)ROLE DESCRIPTIONThe Director of Communications leads all communications for the SFPUC and will directly manage all functions and activities of the Communications Division within the External Affairs Bureau. They are responsible for setting organizational policies, priorities, and objectives for the Communications division; providing leadership and direction in developing new communications programs; and directing and coordinating a comprehensive public and internal communications program.Essential duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:Develop key strategies for all communications across the Agency.Ensure high quality work is produced by the Communications Division.Work closely with the SFPUC Executive Team on media related issues.Manage, motivate, and ensure accountability amongst Communications Division staff.Manage communications consultants and contracts and ensure capital project communications strategies and efforts are aligned with Agency communications goals and outcomes.Provide support to AGM's high priority projects and initiatives and provide guidance to the AGM and EA Management Team on a variety of public relations and strategic communications issues.Identify opportunities to positively position the Agency within the public realm using media, etc.Ensure that the organizational structure within Communications Division is aligned to deliver high quality service to the Agency.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education:
Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university or college, preferably in Communications, Media, Journalism, Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Public Affairs, or closely related field. ANDExperience:
Four years of verifiable managerial and administrative experience planning a comprehensive and multi-faceted communications program, including supervisory experience.Substitution:
An advanced degree in the mentioned fields can substitute for one (1) year of experience.
