Job Description
We’re looking for an experienced editor to guide our Washington reporting, helping a growing team deliver best-in-class coverage of American politics and government.
This editor will oversee the Washington Post’s flagship political newsletter, the Early Brief, and help steer Congressional coverage, balancing daily developments with deeper investigations and enterprise journalism.
The ideal candidate will have experience managing reporters, editing their copy, and fostering their growth. Excellent news judgment, a track record of scoops, accountability journalism, and nuanced explanatory reporting are essential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Edit the Early Brief political newsletter.
- Collaborate with co-anchors to engage readers and build trust.
- Produce scoop-driven coverage that sets the agenda.
- Guide reporters on priorities, targets, and craft.
- Edit stories to high standards, ensuring fairness, rigor, and clarity.
- Make editorial decisions on sourcing and story framing.
- Coordinate with other editors for comprehensive coverage.
- Publish stories optimally for digital audiences, embracing creative formats.
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least 5 years of journalism experience, including 2+ years as an editor.
- Experience with breaking news, accountability targets, and innovative formats.
- Exceptional communication and organizational skills.
- Proven source development and coaching experience.
- Washington politics experience is a plus but not required.
- Experience editing newsletters is a plus.
This position is based in Washington, D.C., with evening and weekend work required.

The salary range is $122,500 - $204,100 USD, depending on experience and qualifications. The role may include bonuses or incentives, discussed during the interview process.
The Washington Post requires employees to work in-office five days a week, with exceptions for newsgathering and travel.
