Job Description
DailyMail.com is looking for an energetic and skilled Politics Editor to join our Washington, D.C., office covering U.S. politics.
You will work alongside the Executive Editor of Politics to lead coverage of news of the day whether it originates on Capitol Hill, at the White House, in Cabinet agencies or on the campaign trail.
This is a rare opportunity for a smart, prolific journalist to edit for the English-speaking world's most-read newspaper website and take on a leadership position.
Outstanding candidates will be able to work flexible hours, be ready to cover news whenever it breaks, and be able to run live coverage of major events. This includes evenings and weekends.
They will be able to edit sharp and entertaining copy and headlines and help our reporters with ideas, projects, and features. They're natural storytellers and understand how to communicate in words, photographs, and video.
The successful applicant will be based in the Washington, D.C., metro area. We offer competitive salary, benefits, and vacation time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Follow breaking news, pitch exclusive projects to the Executive Editor of Politics, and write features based on the pressing political issues of the day that interest DailyMail.com readers in the U.S.
- Focus on politics, power, and influence at a national level.
- Be an ambassador in Washington, D.C., to our DailyMail.com brand and ultimately grow our number of readers.
- Gather and compile information on political events and use news judgment to produce stories that cater to the DailyMail.com audience.
- This position requires working seven days a week, including nights, to keep up with the 24-hour political news cycle. This includes late nights in Congress, major speeches, late-breaking news, and significant developments in contemporaneous issues and scandals.
- Extensive knowledge of Search Engine Optimization and social media to optimize traffic and help spread DailyMail.com stories to as many readers as possible.
- Able to edit copy in DailyMail.com style – with accuracy, entertaining turns of phrases and have input on punchy headlines.
- Help manage a team of political reporters and mentor and collaborate with junior members of the team.
- Work jointly with the executive team to plan the editorial direction and workflow.
- Collaborate with the global editorial team to obtain content from the global desks which may be of interest to the U.S. readership.
- Ability to travel to New York to meet with executive leadership as warranted.
Qualifications:
- Passion for the DailyMail.com brand, its editorial voice, and global audience.
- Experience covering U.S. politics for a news organization that operates in real-time.
- At least six years or more experience managing teams in a major newsroom.
- Demonstrated ability to work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom environment whilst delivering accuracy and precise presentation.
- Capability to write and edit in a high-pressure environment.
- Strong knowledge of Congress, the White House, and federal election campaigns.
Why work for DailyMail.com?
- Be part of a leading global news publication.
- Work in a fast-paced, vibrant environment where the core values of entrepreneurialism, purpose, and excellence resonate in our daily activities.
