This position is responsible for equipment acquisition and maintenance, establishing a culture of safety, training of personnel on the use of engineering equipment and facilities, managing student workers, and other activities to sustain operations across a wide range of engineering projects to support teaching and research.Job DescriptionEssential Functions:Responsible for documentation and compliance of ABET accreditation Criterion 7 except library services. Primary lead on Innovation Studio and classrooms, and collaborates with lab manager on other areas of Criterion 7.Support Innovation Studio and classroomsFor Innovation Studio,
Provide equipment and safety training to students, staff, and faculty; manage and maintain records of such trainingCoordinate with faculty to ensure class needs are met in the innovation workspaceDevelop and implement training/project-based workshops for usersRecruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of student staff including onboarding, scheduling, approval of student hours, and termination/end of jobManage and maintain the Innovation Studio Canvas page and student certificationsCoordinate with other WFU Campus Makerspaces for cross-training
Maintain accurate and complete equipment and material inventories for the Innovation Studio and classrooms.Collaborate with engineering faculty and students to specify, purchase, and organize equipment, furniture, tools, and supplies for the Innovation Studio and classrooms.Responsible for safety training and compliance for spaces and personnel through WFU Environmental Health & Safety and external entities, as necessary, for the Innovation Studio and classrooms.Coordinate planning, maintenance, and repair of equipment in the Innovation Studio and classrooms.Consult with vendors on new products and benchmark programs at peer institutions to keep up-to-date on the latest technologies and techniques in engineering.Actively market the program internally and externally via media and social media.Creates, manages, and implements the department's communication strategy and maintains strong relationships with the campus community and external constituencies.Supports the department in planning, coordinating, marketing, and executing extracurricular projects, programs, events, outreach, and initiatives.Oversees and assists in the creation of digital, video, audio, and print content. Design clean and creative templates for flyers, brochures, newsletters, reports, and all digital and printed materials.Pursue potential internal and external industrial and makerspace related partnerships beneficial to the Engineering department.Support capstone design projects and other curricular projects across the curriculum.Manage multiple tasks or projects simultaneously.Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.
Other Functions:Assist with intramural and extramural proposals for support of new equipment or space needs.Work with property management personnel to report building maintenance issues.Take initiative to support multi-disciplinary projects.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:A bachelors' degree in a technical or related field and/or work experience in an industrial, makerspace, or academic setting.A desire to mentor engineering students and to help them develop "hands-on" technical skills.Ability to work with students from a range of backgrounds and skill levels.Strong communication (verbal and written) skills.Ability to work effectively as part of a team.Ability to be flexible and adaptable to new situations and department needs.Ability to maintain, repair, or troubleshoot equipment in engineering spaces.Proficiency in the use of computers including spreadsheet and online ordering programs.Moderate physical activity including unloading inventory and standing for long periods.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:Experience with the safe handling of chemicals.Experience with engineering software for 2D and 3D Modeling (e.g., AutoDesk, Solidworks).Support hardware and software for electromechanical equipment/systems, microcontrollers, 3D modeling and other prototyping/fabrication equipment, instrumentation, and data acquisition equipment/systems, etc.Technical background in making-related activities.Experience troubleshooting commercial electromechanical equipment.
Accountabilities:Work independently. Report to the Department Chair. Operate within department budget. Maintain accurate records of all inventories.
