The Director of Communications serves as a strategic leader within the Resource and Development team, responsible for increasing Habitat’s visibility, enhancing donor engagement, and maintaining brand consistency through compelling storytelling and integrated communications. This role oversees all communications, marketing, creative, and public/media relations efforts to promote Habitat’s mission of building homes, communities, and hope. The Director collaborates across departments to develop and implement communication strategies that support fundraising, volunteer engagement, advocacy, and organizational goals. This position requires a self-directed, experienced communicator who can both lead a high-performing team and independently manage strategic initiatives with accountability and vision.
Core Responsibilities
Develop and manage the annual communications plan aligned with Habitat’s strategic priorities and fundraising campaigns. Ensure consistent use of Habitat for Humanity’s brand, voice, and visual identity across all channels. Create and oversee strategic messaging that supports donor development, volunteer engagement, advocacy, and the dispelling of myths through education. Elevate Habitat’s public presence through thoughtful, mission-aligned storytelling and campaign execution. Lead media relations strategy by cultivating relationships with local and regional media, drafting and distributing press releases, and coordinating interviews and press coverage. Act as a spokesperson for the organization by taking part in media interviews, live shots, speaking engagements, and public events to represent Habitat’s mission and impact. Collaborate with internal departments to address communication-related operational challenges, ensure program alignment, proactively plan outreach strategies, and meet communication needs. Provide strategic oversight and guidance for digital, print, and visual content development, ensuring alignment with brand standards and campaign goals. Manage and mentor the Communications Coordinator and Multimedia Design Specialist, fostering professional development and high performance. Oversee day-to-day execution of campaigns, content calendars, and creative production workflows.
Competencies:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including fine editing/copywriting, and a keen eye for layout design, colors, and presentation Demonstrates organizational skills and the ability to multitask and prioritize projects while working on a deadline or in a fast-paced environment Demonstrated ability to work independently with sound judgment, initiative, and accountability for results Team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment in a manner consistent with the organization’s values: integrity, teamwork and mission focus
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field 3–5 years of experience in strategic communications, preferably in the nonprofit or mission-driven sector Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects Exceptional written and verbal communication skills Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
