About Desert Steel:
Desert Steel is a Wichita-based, independently owned company that designs and fabricates unique steel landscape sculptures for residential and commercial spaces around the world. Our work blends nature, art, and metal to create pieces that are as durable as they are beautiful.
Job Summary:
We’re looking for a talented, detail oriented CAD Designer/Drafter who can take creative concepts and transform them into detailed, buildable drawings for our fabrication team. This role requires both technical drafting skills and artistic design sensitivity. This person would contribute to designing new pieces, refining parts to make manufacturing easier, programing parts to run on one of our fiber lasers and more. Responsibilities:
- Create 2D and 3D CAD drawings for custom steel products, including sculptures, planters, and more.
- Translate artistic sketches and verbal ideas into accurate technical drawings.
- Transform flat pattern forms into 3-dimensional shapes
- Collaborate with artists, production, shipping, marketing, landscape designers and more to ensure designs are functional and manufacturable.
- Revise drawings based on feedback or engineering changes.
- Maintain organized digital drawing files and create a systematic approach to file maintenance.
- Participate in the development of new products and the refinement of existing products.
- Program parts for cutting on Amada Fiber lasers using the Amada software (job training program included)
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Demonstrated proficiency in Rhino 3D (7 or higher) required.
- Familiarity with Grasshopper plug-in for Rhino (or other parametric design software) preferred.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Fusion 360 a plus.
- 2+ years of experience in CAD drafting or mechanical design (or equivalent training).
- Basic understanding of sheet metal fabrication, welding, and other metalworking processes a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Creative mindset and appreciation for design/artwork.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Desire to learn new things and immediately apply those to the work environment.
Preferred (not required):
- Experience with rendering or visualization software.
- Experience with 3D modeling software like SketchUp
- Background in industrial design, sculpture, or architecture.
- Interest or experience in landscape design.
- Hands-on experience in a fabrication or shop environment.
