Job Description Summary:The Director of Design will lead, mentor, and develop SOLV Energy's in-house design team.
This position can be Remote or Hybrid in San Diego, CA.

Position Responsibilities and Duties:Department Management/LeadershipHire, manage, and mentor a multidisciplinary team of engineers, designers, and CAD technicians responsible for the initial stage design and engineering of utility-scale solar projects (i.e., from conceptualization through 30% design).Foster effective communication and collaboration between the design group and cross-function teams, including internal and external engineers, business development managers, project managers, pre-construction managers, procurement specialists, schedulers, estimators, and construction teams.Allocate resources effectively to meet project deadlines and ensure optimal team utilization.Overall management and responsibility of SOLV's multidisciplinary EPC design team, including establishing and maintaining design department budgets and project design schedules.
Develop comprehensive designs for utility-scale solar projects.The primary focus will be developing 30% designs to serve as the basis for our business development and estimating efforts. This includes site layouts, grading & drainage plans, SWPPP plans, access road designs, foundation designs, AC/DC system design, inverter sizing and layout, grounding and bonding design, BESS design, interconnection designs, and energy production modeling.Analyze feasibility studies, site assessments, and other RFP documents provided by project owners to identify potential constraints/risks and opportunities for optimization.Evaluate and recommend appropriate electrical components (DC collection system, inverters, transformers, switchgear, conductors, etc.) based on their performance, reliability, ease of installation, and cost-effectiveness.Oversee the development of the project energy production models (i.e., PVsyst) and ensure that the electrical and civil designs support the owner's production requirements.
Value Engineering / InnovationDevelop innovative, customer-centric engineering solutions that address client needs, reduce costs, and enhance project value, ultimately contributing to SOLV's competitive advantage and success in winning new work.Stay abreast of the solar industry's latest technologies, products, and trends.
Technical ExpertiseRepresent SOLV Energy's team as a technical subject matter expert (SME) during client interviews/meetings.Stay updated on industry best practices and technological advancements in utility-scale solar design.Stay informed on relevant regulation, code, and guideline changes that may impact future SOLV project designs.Provide SME guidance/consultation to other departments within SOLV, as needed.
QA/QCImplement and maintain quality control processes to ensure designs comply with all owner, SOLV, AHJ, and vendor requirements.Proactively identify and resolve potential design and construction challenges and coordinate with various stakeholders to develop cost-effective solutions.
Training and DevelopmentIdentify training and development needs within the design department and provide opportunities for skills enhancement and professional growth.Develop and mentor staff for career advancement.
Minimum Skills or Experience Required:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (preferred), Civil Engineering, or a related field.10+ years of engineering, construction management, or equivalent experience in the solar industryProfessional Engineer (PE) licenseProven track record of successfully designing and delivering utility-scale solar projects.Strong technical background in PV system design, electrical engineering, and civil engineering.Demonstrated experience managing multidisciplinary teams and working in a fast-paced environment.Deep understanding of industry codes and requirementsProficiency in AutoCAD, PVsyst, or other relevant design software.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbalStrong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.Strong sense of urgency.Ability to analyze and evaluate design alternatives for cost-effectiveness and value.Ability to travel extensively throughout the United States, up to 50% of the time

$155,576.00 - $206,920.00
