Director Of Music Ministry Job Description
Position Overview: The Director of Music Ministry is a full-time, salaried/exempt position at St. John Fisher, Grizzly Catholic Campus Ministry, Oakland University Parish. The position is expected to start officially on July 1, 2025, or sooner if available. The role involves leading the community in prayerful and engaging liturgies through music, respecting Catholic traditions and contemporary worship styles.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform at Sunday Masses at 10am and 6pm, with consideration for vacations and holidays.
- Maintain presence in the office several days a week, with a scheduled day off approved by the Pastor.
- Develop and lead multiple choirs, making them interchangeable in personnel and music style.
- Conduct Thursday 7:15pm Mass with choir.
- Attend daily Mass on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 12:05pm, especially on Holy Days and major solemnities.
- Participate in worship committee meetings and other liturgical planning.
- Engage with Oakland University Music Department and other local arts organizations to develop talent and relationships.
- Coordinate participation in major liturgical seasons and events, including Christmas, Easter, Holy Days, and parish celebrations.
- Support special events like weddings, funerals, and off-campus services as needed.
- Work directly with Fr. Steve Mateja for planning and execution of liturgies.
- Coordinate music for various liturgical and seasonal events, including Penance Services, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, and May Crowning.
- Lead and organize choir rehearsals, recruit members, and foster active congregational participation.
- Maintain musical instruments, equipment, and music library.
- Create worship aids and ensure compliance with copyright laws.
- Evaluate and improve the music program annually.
- Be actively involved in parish events and community outreach.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Proficiency in organ and piano performance.
- Strong understanding of Catholic liturgical music, capable of blending traditional and contemporary styles.
- Leadership skills to develop and sustain a vibrant music ministry.
- Possession of a Basic Diploma in Music Ministry or willingness to pursue one during employment.
