Assistant Publicity Director, Crown (Hybrid)
The Crown Publishing Group seeks a skilled and experienced Assistant Director to join the Crown imprint. This is an exciting opportunity to work on bestselling, acclaimed fiction and non-fiction in the current affairs, social justice, history, self-improvement, and memoir categories. Crown publishes such notable authors as President Barack Obama, former First Lady Michelle Obama, Rachel Maddow, Erik Larson, Matthew McConaughey, Liane Moriarty, Chris Whitaker, Matthew Desmond, Sally Rooney, and Timothy Snyder.
Reporting to the VP, Director of Publicity, the ideal candidate will have experience strategizing on and executing non-fiction and fiction book campaigns, a well-established network of national broadcast, print and online media contacts, excellent communication and project management skills, and thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Oversees the development, planning and execution of publicity campaigns for titles across the Crown list each season; this includes identifying possible readerships, maximizing exposure for our authors and books through earned media roll-outs, creating dynamic author events, and brainstorming ideas for engaging the sales department, outside partners, and social media communities.
- Participates in and contributes publicity perspective at key internal and external meetings with editors, sales, authors, and agents.
- High-touch author care and attentive communication with authors and agents.
- Developing, researching, and maintaining strong relationships with national, online, and local media contacts.
- Attending and presenting at regular sales, publishing and integrated meetings.
- Author media training and appearance preparation.
- Identifies opportunities for enhancing and improving both imprint campaigns and departmental best practices--new tools, platforms, partners, outlets, trends, etc.
- This is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities which include attendance at in-person meetings with authors and agents, staffing of author events, and accompanying authors to media engagements.
Please apply if you meet the following qualifications:
- A minimum 8 years of relevant experience in publicity, ideally at a major adult publisher.
- Campaign work across fiction and non-fiction categories.
- Experience working with sensitive material and high profile authors.
- Exceptional communication and pitching skills.
- Well established relationships with national and regional media contacts.
- Have the ability to work both independently as well as in a collaborative setting.
- Expertise presenting in front of large groups including internal meetings.
- Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively while also responding to urgent issues.
- A motivated self-starter, strategic thinker and team player.
The salary range for this position is $85-$90K. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
The position of Assistant Director is a hybrid position with regular in-office responsibilities, which include but are not limited to in-person meetings, escorting authors to events and media, and ad hoc projects as they arise. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, & PA).
