The County of San Luis Obispo is seeking a knowledgeable and forward-thinking individual to serve in the role of Senior Geographic Info Systems (GIS) Analyst to lead advanced geospatial initiatives that support countywide operations as a backfill during the County's ERP implementation.
Current vacancies:
- 1 Full-Time Limited Term (2-year appointment) vacancy in our Downtown Public Works Office.
- Appointment end date for this position is still to be determined.
- Funding for this position is subject to approval by the County of San Luis Obispo Board of Supervisors. Anticipated Board approval date is August 19, 2025.
- Employees in limited term positions receive benefits equivalent to permanent full-time employees, therefore will be eligible to earn vacation, sick leave, health, and pension benefits.
This is a senior-level role responsible for the development, integration, and management of enterprise GIS applications, spatial data, and web-based mapping tools that serve multiple County departments and the public. The Senior GIS Analyst will work extensively with Esri software, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Portal for ArcGIS, and will also support and enhance solutions built on the VertiGIS Studio platform. Proficiency with Python for scripting and automation is preferred, as it enables more efficient data management, analysis, and integration with other County systems. In this role, the Analyst will manage complex datasets, configure intuitive web applications, and serve as a technical advisor and mentor to junior GIS staff.

Distinguishing Characteristics
Senior Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Analyst is not part of the GIS Analyst class series. This class is the advanced professional level classification and is distinguished from the higher level GIS Program Manager in that the Senior GIS Analyst is responsible for Department level GIS activities and supporting the GIS enterprise, whereas the GIS Program Manager has overall responsibility for the coordination of countywide GIS activities.

The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated GIS professional with at least five years of hands-on experience in geospatial analysis, application development, and enterprise GIS administration. They will demonstrate a strong ability to manage competing priorities, communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, and translate business needs into practical GIS solutions.A solid foundation in Esri platformsincluding ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Portal for ArcGISis essential, as is experience working with geodatabases and web-based GIS applications. Familiarity with VertiGIS Studio is highly desired. While Python scripting is not required, proficiency or a willingness to develop this skill is necessary, especially for automating workflows and enhancing data integration.The successful candidate will bring a strong work ethic, an aptitude for continuous learning, and the ability to stay current with emerging GIS technologies and best practices. They should be comfortable working independently and collaboratively, supporting both field and office-based staff, and taking a leadership role in project planning and execution. Experience working with Public Works or in a similar government setting is a plus.
Education and Experience
A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in GIS, Cartography, Geography, Computer Science, Engineering, Planning, or other GIS related field; AND four years of experience of increasing responsibility related to geographic information systems or computer-aided mapping. One year of such experience being at the level of a GIS Analyst III or equivalent position.OR B: An associates degree or 60 semester units or 90 quarter units from an accredited college or university or completion from a job-related, accredited vocational institution; AND six years of experience of increasing responsibility related to geographic information systems or computer-aided mapping. One year of such experience being at the level of a GIS Analyst III or equivalent position.
