Slavic languages - Legal Translator, Editor, and Transcriber - Remote Status: Freelance 1099 Contractor
Global Language Strategies, a woman-owned small business headquartered in the Washington DC metropolitan region, is currently seeking professional freelance translators, editors, and transcribers to translate, edit and/or transcribe legal documents between the foreign language and English.
We are seeking the following languages: Armenian, Belarusian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Polish, Serbian, Slovak, Slovene, or Ukrainian native-level speakers with near-native English proficiency.
Job Duties:
- Provide accurate translation and/or editing of documents and/or transcription of audio files involving law enforcement, forensic, and legal subject matter from the foreign language to/from English.
- Edit audio transcriptions that include slang and idioms.
- Edit legal documents, such as affidavits, depositions, etc., while demonstrating a strong command of legal terminology in both English and the target language.
- Excellent written communication skills in English and the target foreign language, with Advanced Proficiency (reading/speaking/listening, writing) level 3-plus in English and the foreign target language, as assessed by the International Language Roundtable (ILR) scale.
- Translate and/or transcribe following the government client’s style guides and quality standards.
- Use domain-specific terminology.
- Review and certify the quality of other translators’ work, as needed.
- Highly proficient in MS Office, with the ability to mirror source document format in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Familiar with the use of CAT tools, such as Trados Studio.
- Abide by a code of ethics when performing transcription and translation work.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be willing to undergo a U.S. government background check to obtain a Public Trust Clearance Moderate Level.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- At least 3 years of experience in LEGAL translating and/or editing between English and a foreign language.
- At least 3 years of experience performing audio transcription with the ability to use software to enhance sound and equipment to aid in transcription.
- Familiar with legal terminology in both English and the target foreign language(s).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office. 6 Translators and editors must proficiently use CAT tools, such as SDL Trados.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bilingual with documented legal translation, editing or transcription experience.
- Bilingual experience with editing audio transcription documents.
- ATA, NAJIT or other relevant professional certification.
