The Record of Stockton, California, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is looking for a self-starter to cover sports at nearly two dozen high schools in the area, including Division I athletes and a Division I university in the West Coast Conference.
This reporter should be comfortable using metrics for enterprise and watchdog stories, and have strong reporting and writing skills to deliver compelling human-interest stories. Building relationships with athletes, coaches, and fans to break news is essential. The role requires ownership of the beat, voice and authority in stories and social media, and willingness to experiment with media formats.
Living in Stockton offers proximity to California’s Central Valley, Sacramento, San Francisco, and Oakland.
Responsibilities
- Create engaging storytelling using metrics.
- Become the community’s leading voice in college sports.
- Engage with the community through storytelling, social media, and outreach.
- Collaborate with editors and strategists to meet audience needs.
- Include multimedia elements like photos and videos; capture basic media as needed.
- Promote personal and institutional brands.
- Provide excellent customer service to readers.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in communications, journalism, or related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
- Reporting experience preferred; sports coverage experience is a plus.
- Proficiency with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit).
- Experience with mobile photo and video editing.
- Strong communication, news judgment, and headline-writing skills.
- Ability to multitask and meet deadlines under pressure.
- Collaborative and efficient work style.
- Excellent writing, spelling, grammar, and familiarity with AP style.
- Availability to work some nights and weekends.
- Comfort in building a beat and communicating with athletes and coaches.
- Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and required insurance.
