Job Description
Status: Contractor, Part-Time
Global Language Strategies, a woman-owned small business headquartered in the Washington DC metropolitan region, is currently seeking professional freelance translators and editors to perform work on legal documents between English and Arabic
Job Duties: Arabic English
1) Provide accurate translation and editing of documents involving law enforcement and legal subject matter from foreign languages into English to Arabic and vice versa.
2) Edit audio transcriptions with slang and idiom.
3) Edit legal documents, such as affidavits, depositions, etc., while demonstrating a strong command of legal terminology in both English and the target language.
4) Excellent written communication skills in English and the target foreign language, with Advanced Proficiency (reading/speaking/listening, writing) level 4-plus in English and the foreign target language, as assessed by the International Language Roundtable (ILR) scale.
5) Translate and edit following the government client’s style guides and quality standards.
6) Use domain-specific terminology.
7) Review and certify the quality of other translators’ work, as needed.
8) Highly proficient in MS Office, with the ability to mirror source document format in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
9) Familiar with the use of CAT tools, such as Trados Studio.
10) Abide by a code of ethics when performing transcription and translation work.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
1) Holds active U.S. Public Trust or higher security clearance or willing to undergo a U.S. government background check to obtain a Public Trust Clearance Moderate Level.
2) Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
3) At least 3 years’ experience in translating and/or editing between English and Arabic.
4) Familiar with legal terminology in both English and the target foreign language(s).
5) Proficient in Microsoft Office.
6 Translators and editors must proficiently use CAT tools, such as SDL Trados.
Preferred Qualifications:
1) Bilingual (English and Arabic) with a law degree, paralegal certificate, or documented legal translation or transcription experience.
2) Bilingual (English and Arabic) experience with editing audio transcription documents.
3) Active Public Trust or higher security clearance or willing to process a security clearance.
4) ATA, NAJIT or other relevant professional certification.
