Expected compensation: 52.00 - 65.00 USD Per Hour
HireArt is helping Toyota Research Institute (TRI) find a User Experience Researcher to help plan and execute human-subjects research studies. In this role, you will support scientists and engineers in designing and evaluating innovations that address human-centered problems with the latest AI technologies.
We are looking for detail-oriented, collaborative, and creative professionals who have experience in planning, running, and analyzing studies involving human participants and data.
A successful candidate thrives in dynamic, fast-paced research environments while working on multiple project threads with multiple stakeholders and adapts to learn the latest research and analysis methods, whether quantitative, qualitative, or both. The ideal candidate will have strengths in both qualitative and quantitative methods.
As a User Experience Researcher, You'll
- Collaborate with scientists, software engineers, and other cross-functional stakeholders to plan and run research studies with human participants.
- Manage all study materials, participant recruitment with vendors, participant communication, and compliance with study protocols.
- Define study protocols, design study tasks, and identify measures with minimal guidance of senior members.
- Conduct user studies, including collecting experimental data using study instruments, software, questionnaires, surveys, and interviews, both online and in-person.
- Build, test, and deploy surveys to collect participant data.
- Perform physical, hands-on tasks involved in running studies, such as setting up study equipment, helping participants put on and calibrate wearable sensors, driving simulator operation, prototype transportation, etc.
- Maintain data privacy and security of participant information and study data.
- Collaborate with scientists to define an analysis plan to address all key research questions.
- Apply appropriate analysis techniques to generate insights, recommendations, and reports, including statistical analysis of quantitative data and/or identifying key themes using qualitative coding schemes.
- Collaborate with scientists to create reports of research processes and outcomes.
- Author assigned sections of reports or scientific papers and presentations.
- Present portions of findings to stakeholders.
- Documenting processes and best practices and training junior colleagues.
- Conduct literature reviews and competitive analyses.
- Bachelors or Masters degree (or equivalent work experience) in Human Factors, Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, Psychology, Statistics, Economics, or a similar field emphasizing human performance and behavior
- Experience in the following:
- Proctoring your own user studies with human subjects, both in-person and online
- Managing and analyzing either quantitative data using Python, R, etc., OR qualitative data analysis and developing codebooks using relevant tools (Atlas.ti, NVivo, Dedoose, etc.)
- You are friendly, empathetic, and patient, especially when working with diverse study participants.
- You are detail-oriented and capable of working independently, while also thriving in collaborative, cross-disciplinary teams.
- You are proactive, manage your time well, and seek out opportunities for impact and growth.
- You have strong oral and written communication skills, are open to giving and receiving feedback, and enjoy learning through collaboration.
- You bring scientific curiosity and a desire to understand people, technology, and their interactions.
- Experience in the following
- Generating categories from qualitative data and performing coding
- Survey design experience (i.e., survey logic, randomization, etc.)
- Generating study stimuli (e.g., descriptive scenarios, animation, video, physical mockups)
- User experience interface design, Figma, storyboarding, and sketching
- Prototyping software for basic web/mobile interfaces
- Survey platforms such as Qualtrics, Survey Monkey, Gorilla.sc, etc
- Online participant platforms such as Amazon Mechanical Turk, Prolific, dScout, etc.
- Machine learning or generative AI tools
