AMECO, a North American leader in Lifting and Rigging equipment, is seeking a talented and detail-oriented Mechanical Designer to create, develop and implement machine and component designs. Our ideal candidate has a strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, excellent problem-solving skills, and experience with CAD software, in 2D and 3D.
Responsibilities
- Analyze project requirements, technical specifications, and system needs to inform design strategy.
- Design mechanical systems and components that meet or exceed performance and compliance standards.
- Back-engineer existing equipment to improve functionality, materials selection, and manufacturing processes.
- Use computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software to create cutting-patterns as well as prototypes and detailed plans.
- Produce shop drawings and .dxf files for the steel cutting process. (approx. 10-15% of workload)
- Perform simulations and tests to verify and improve the performance of a design.
- Collaborate with operators, supervisors, fabricators, project managers, other engineers, and stakeholders to ensure a design meets all necessary requirements and expectations.
- Maintain detailed documentation of design processes, decisions, and results.
- Review and revise designs based on feedback, testing results, or changes in requirements.
- Ensure all designs comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and environmental guidelines.
- Apply core engineering principles to develop practical, cost-effective solutions.
- Support pre-engineering and scope development to assist with cost estimation for incoming opportunities.
- Provide regular updates and reports to management and clients.
- Prioritize Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) compliance, always.
- Minimum of 5 years' work experience as a mechanical designer or similar role.
- Proficiency in Solid Works 3D design and AutoCAD-type software for 2-D plans, schematics, and diagrams.
- Experienced in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Strong understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals and design principles.
- Excellent problem-solving and mathematical skills.
- Strong communication and team management skills.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and compliance standards.
- Excellent mechanical aptitude and practical troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and work effectively under pressure.
- Willingness to travel overnight (5-10%) as project demands dictate.
- Associate's or bachelor's degree in mechanical technology or mechanical engineering OR equivalent industry related work experience.
- Knowledge of inland barge design and marine equipment standards.
- Working knowledge of pneumatic, hydraulic, and electric control systems.
- Working knowledge of diesel, and electric drive systems, including tiered engines, DC and VFD's.
- Working knowledge of winches, rigging, cranes, and derricks is a strong asset.
