King County Metro Transit’s Facilities Division has an exciting opportunity for a Transit Radio Maintenance Chief (Transit Chief – Radio Maintenance). We are seeking to fill this position with an outstanding people leader.
The role of the Transit Chief is critical to the management and oversight of the daily operations of Transit and the service we provide. Transit Chiefs provide policy direction, create an environment that models customer service, work collaboratively with union leaders and others within the organization, and are a resource to employees at the worksite. This leadership role requires the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse employee work group, proactively solve problems that impact service delivery, provide quality customer service, and motivate employees through building respect and trust.
Transit Chiefs are proactive in facilitating good working relationships, demonstrating cooperative interactions, and promoting teamwork with new members, facilitating inclusion, and demonstrating flexibility in accomplishing shared goals. Our Transit Chiefs demonstrate support for the goals of the organization in providing quality public service and collaboratively working with other sections and departments, while recognizing the value of diversity of opinion, culture, and perspective.
This position will supervise and coordinate the maintenance and repair of communications systems, data systems, fire/life/safety systems, and electronic equipment used in support of Transit operations. This includes the tracking of cost, productivity, reliability for maintaining all systems, inventory of materials, supplies and shop equipment, as well as supervision and management of employees assigned to the installation and maintenance of this equipment and systems. This position may serve as a technical expert or project lead for transportation communications related projects.
This recruitment may immediately fill up to one (1) Career Service position and may also be used to establish an eligibility pool to fill future Career Service positions that may occur over the next six (6) months, at the discretion of the hiring authority.
First round interviews are currently anticipated to occur between May 12 through May 16, 2025, but dates are subject to change.

- Assign and supervise the installation, maintenance, and repair of Transit Communications systems used in the operations of the King County Metro Transit system, including but not limited to, Transit Radio system, Transit Microwave system, Transit Fire/Life/Safety systems, and Transit Security systems, as required.
- Plan, schedule, coordinate, supervise, evaluate, and create the work and performance standards of the section's staff.

- Conduct performance evaluations, interview job applicants, and perform other supervisory functions, as required.
- Ensure that safety procedures, tools, equipment, and facilities are maintained properly to provide a safe and efficient work environment.
- Maintain accurate records for electronic maintenance, timekeeping, personnel, and other related matters. Prepare reports on the section's activities, as required. Prepare section budget, including projections for future personnel and equipment needs.
- Serve as a subject matter expert and provide technical support for Transit Division projects, as requested, such as On-Board Systems, Transit Radio replacement projects, and other projects as assigned.
- Oversee troubleshooting, testing, and technical analysis processes, and provide relevant feedback and results to designated project managers. The position has frequent contacts with other personnel to coordinate repair work and installations, and to exchange technical information (schematics, CAD). Outside of King County, contacts are with sales representatives, vendors, Department of Transportation (DOT), the Federal Communication Commission (FCC), and other transit property personnel to exchange technical information. Will work closely with other Chiefs to assure adequate workgroup support to meet Transit service requirements.
- Utilize Microsoft Office Suite and asset management software.
- Transit Chiefs will act as Superintendent when assigned and will perform other job duties as necessary.
To be considered eligible for this role, applicants must possess theseMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Four (4) or more years of journey-level work experience in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of fixed and mobile electronic communications equipment is required, with two (2) or more years of work experience in a lead or supervisory capacity.
- Working knowledge of the principles of electrical and electronics theory, and the procedures used in the operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, servicing, and repair of equipment.
- Knowledge of appropriate Federal, State, and Local regulations related to safety and the communications field (FCC, OSHA, applicable WAC and RCW codes, etc.)
- Ability to work and provide motivation in a team environment and with a diverse work group.
- Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to resolve conflict, solve problems, and listen effectively.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Knowledge of workload planning and scheduling, with ability to effectively manage competing priorities.
- Intermediate computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and computerized work order systems, e.g. Enterprise Asset Management (EMS) or similar asset management software.

SELECTION PROCESS

SAFETY SENSITIVE
This position is considered safety-sensitive. WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in an industrial setting where the worker is exposed to or near heavy operating machinery, high voltage, adverse weather conditions, uneven surfaces; catwalks/metal grating, noxious or toxic gasses and chemicals. The noise level is quiet to occasionally loud. Hearing protection and eye protection are required in some areas, and hard hats and other appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required on occasion.
WORK LOCATION AND SCHEDULE
This position may report to a variety of locations, which may include: Central Facilities Maintenance (1301 Airport Way S; Seattle, WA 98134); and, Power Distribution Headquarters (2255 4th Avenue S; Seattle, WA 98134). Work may be required at other facilities through the Metro Transit service area.
This position is anticipated to be full time, assigned 40 hours per week. Schedules can include day, swing, and overnight shifts, and work on weekends, holidays, and other non-standard workdays, and employees must be available for emergency response call-outs when needed. Additionally, this position participates in a mandatory on-call rotation to provide immediate response to Transit incidents and other emergencies as required. This may be a 30-day rotation during which the Transit Chief must be available to respond to emergencies by phone, radio, or on-site, if necessary, 24 hours a day and on weekends and holidays, to direct and coordinate personnel and equipment, with other work groups or agencies, as appropriate. This position is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, and is therefore not eligible for overtime pay. This position requires consistent on-site presence to accomplish assigned duties, and is generally not eligible for telework/remote work.
