PRIMARY DUTY: The News Director covers and coordinates gathering and assigning of stories for newscasts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Coordinates gathering of stories for 19 daily local/regional newscasts including assigning stories, maintaining daily file of events and issues, monitoring and evaluating student writing and news delivery.
- Maintains contact with news sources and leaders in education, business, agriculture, law enforcement, and government.
- Covers major news events/media conferences in listening area and serves as news anchor.
- Produces long-form feature programming, election coverage, political debates, and special events.
- Assesses major issues affecting the area, prepares programming addressing these issues, and produces the FCC required Issues and Programs lists.
- Posts local/regional news to the KXCV-KRNW website.
- Sends stories to Associated Press Wire Service and National Public Radio and coordinates feeding of stories to other radio stations.
- Serves as program director for the news component of the station's programming.
- Coordinates severe weather coverage.
- Assists with annual on-air fund drives and other station special events.
- Is the on-location broadcast announcer for special events, community events, and festivals.
- Assists with KXCV-KRNW social media platforms.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in broadcasting, mass media, or communications (An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).
Certification/License: Driver’s License.
Experience: Two years of experience in media, on-air news working cooperatively with production, traffic, and programming departments; public broadcasting or commercial broadcast experience; experience gathering, writing news and sports; experience with on-air equipment.
Skills: Passion for public media; excellent verbal communication skills; ability to travel throughout the listening area covering news; ability to interact, train, and involve Northwest students interested in news broadcast career; proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, WireReady news software, and audio editing software.
WORKING CONDITIONS: This position will work in a typical professional office environment with hours 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with some evening and weekend hours in addition to traditional workdays. This position also requires travel throughout the station’s coverage area.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Train and supervise student news staff.
EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS USED: Standard radio broadcast equipment; Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, WireReady, and other broadcast software.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Typical office environment with ability to lift and carry broadcast equipment and some travel within the station’s coverage area.
