Job Description
Position Title: Part-Time Library Assistant I
Location: Reeves County, Texas
Job Description:
Overview: As a Library Assistant I in Reeves County, you will play a vital role in supporting the operations and services of the library, assisting patrons, maintaining library materials, and contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of library functions. Working under the supervision of the Head Librarian or Library Director, you will perform a variety of tasks to ensure the smooth operation of the library and the satisfaction of its patrons.
Responsibilities:
- Patron Assistance:
- Provide friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable assistance to library patrons, answering inquiries, providing information, and offering guidance on library resources, services, and policies.
- Assist patrons in locating materials, using library equipment, accessing digital resources, and navigating library databases and catalogs.
- Assist patrons with basic technology needs, including computer use, printing, copying, scanning, and troubleshooting technical issues.
- Circulation Services:
- Process library materials for circulation, including checking items in and out, issuing library cards, and registering new patrons.
- Assist patrons with renewals, holds, and interlibrary loan requests, and collect fines and fees for overdue materials or lost items.
- Maintain accurate circulation records, shelving materials, and organizing collections to ensure easy access and retrieval.
- Collection Maintenance:
- Assist with the selection, acquisition, cataloging, and processing of library materials, including books, periodicals, audiovisual materials, and digital resources.
- Perform routine tasks such as shelving, shelf-reading, weeding, and inventory management to maintain the organization, cleanliness, and appearance of library collections.
- Assist in conducting regular inventories, identifying missing or damaged items, and initiating replacement or repair processes as needed.
- Program Support:
- Assist with the planning, promotion, and implementation of library programs, events, and outreach activities for patrons of all ages, including story times, workshops, book clubs, and educational presentations.
- Set up and clean-up program spaces, arrange seating, display promotional materials, and assist presenters and participants as needed.
- Provide logistical support for guest speakers, performers, and community partners involved in library programs and events.
- Technology Support:
- Assist patrons with basic computer skills, software applications, internet browsing, and digital literacy training.
- Monitor and troubleshoot library equipment, including computers, printers, scanners, and audiovisual equipment, and report technical issues to appropriate staff for resolution.
- Assist patrons with accessing and using online resources, databases, e-books, and other digital services available through the library's website or subscription services.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience working in a library or customer service setting preferred.
- Knowledge of library principles, practices, and procedures, including cataloging, classification, and circulation functions.
- Strong customer service skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with patrons of diverse backgrounds and age groups.
- Proficiency in computer applications, including library management systems, Microsoft Office, and internet research tools.
- Attention to detail, with the ability to organize and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexibility to work evenings as needed. Must work Fridays and Saturdays.
- Enthusiasm for promoting literacy, lifelong learning, and community engagement through library services.
