Reporting to the CHC Public Services and Processing Coordinator, the Library Assistant facilities public service in the Cuban Heritage Collection Reading Room; helps process books, periodicals, and archival collections acquired via gift or purchase; and prepares donor correspondence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Public Services (50%)Staffs the Reading Room service desk and attends to researchers and visitors as needed.Instructs researchers regarding policies and procedures and ensures that these are followed by all users.Assists researchers in using Aeon and the online catalog and other research resources such as finding aids, digital collections, and research guides.Provides basic reference assistance at the Reading Room desk and refers researchers to the appropriate staff and/or faculty for in-depth services.Retrieves materials as directed for research and instruction use.Tracks movement of materials to other departments including Metadata and Discovery Services, Digital Production Lab, and Inter-Library Loan.Tracks Aeon requests and reshelving of materials in CHC Stacks.Ensures security of materials in the Reading Room.Assists patrons in the use of requested materials in the Reading Room, including the handling of rare books, periodicals, maps, and manuscript materials.Receives, redirects, and takes messages for incoming phone calls.
Acquisitions Services (40%)Assists with initial processing of books, periodicals, and archival collections as directed.Creates acknowledgement letters for donors.
Other duties and responsibilities as Assigned (10%):Assists CHC faculty and staff with special projects as assigned.
Communications, Relationships, and Service (applicable towards all duties)Maintains helpful and supportive customer service behavior with all library users.Establishes effective interdepartmental relationships to increase unit effectiveness and disseminate information.Communicates frequently and effectively with colleagues in a timely manner regarding procedures, policies, and other necessary information.

The Library Assistant reports directly to the CHC Public Services and Processing Coordinator.
Supervision given:
The individual does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Levels of contact:
Within the library, this individual works with all levels of library faculty and staff as well as student employees. In addition, this individual will work with students, faculty, and staff from the University, and members of the research community and the Libraries support groups (i.e, Amigos of the Cuban Heritage Collection and donors).
QUALIFICATIONSBachelor's degreeBilingual in English and Spanish (written and spoken)One-year relevant work experience. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, and Access
