Lili’uokalani Center (LC)
Informed by a deep understanding of the adolescent experience andgrounded in Hawaiian culture, the new LC will provide Hawaiian youth with opportunities to connect to peers and mentors, receive supportive services, and discover pathways to passion, purpose, and prosperity. LC will be LT's signature youth development hub for culture, creativity, technology, and play and will serve as a resource center where youth can connect to vital support and a vibrant community. LC will be a safe space located in urban Honolulu where youth are inspired to pursue their dreams, including exploring pathways in the arts, sports, technology, and entrepreneurship while receiving wraparound support to help them reach their goals and become thriving adults. A primary function of LC will be to provide a space for young people to play, to learn, to find connection and inspiration, and to experience joy.

Currently under construction, LC is set to open in Spring of 2025.
Job Purpose
The Teaching Artist will support the Choir Director by providing instrumental accompaniment for vocal instruction and performances. This role focuses on creating a dynamic musical environment where youth can thrive in their vocal pursuits, enhancing the quality of instruction with piano, guitar, and/or ʻukulele accompaniment.
Essential Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Choir Director to provide accompaniment for vocal lessons and rehearsals.
- Design and Implement Curriculum for youth ages 12-24 in fundamental skills on instruments such as piano, guitar, and ʻukulele.
- Support the development of the musical repertoire, including traditional Hawaiian songs and contemporary pieces.
- Participate in community showcases and performances, contributing to a supportive and enriching performance environment.
- Utilize the available creative spaces such as the Black Box Theatre, Music Hall, Dance Studio, Recording Studio, Gymnasium, and Innovation Lounge.
- Incorporate traditional Hawaiian Music practices into programming and working with local practitioners whenever possible.
- Integrate cultural sensitivity and other necessary concepts into learning theatre, helping youth develop critical understanding and responsible embodiment of culture-based artforms.
- Collaborate with LC staff to ensure programming aligns with the center's mission and goals.
- Facilitate workshops, group projects, and one-on-one mentorship to engage and support youth in their creative endeavors.
- Maintain a safe and inclusive environment for all participants.
- Assist with outreach efforts to engage the local community and encourage participation in dance programming.
- Manage program supplies and equipment responsibly, ensuring proper usage and maintenance.
- Evaluate program effectiveness and make recommendations for improvements.
- Contribute to the Trust's success by accepting new assignments, helping team members, learning new skills, and striving to improve team and organization results.
- Evening and weekend hours are required as needed.
- Other duties as needed and assigned
- Bachelor's degree in music or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Experience working with youth in an educational or community setting.
- Proficiency in piano, guitar, and/orʻukulele with experience in accompanying vocalists.
- Background in music education, performance, or a related field preferred.
- Experience working with youth and promoting musical development.
- Knowledge of Hawaiian music is a plus but not mandatory.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively.
- Proficiency in piano a plus.
- Experience in curriculum development and lesson planning.
- Knowledge of best practices in youth development.
- Passion for fostering creativity and artistic expression in young people.
