Position Overview
The Communications Director translates Cape Fear Literacy Council’s mission and vision into compelling narratives that resonate with stakeholders. The role builds trust within the local community by showing how CFLC answers its vision's call with tangible examples. It inspires volunteerism, monetary support, and program enrollment by highlighting the challenges and accomplishments of adult learners, the rewarding experiences of volunteers, and the connectedness of funders and donors to the mission of the organization.
Using fact-driven methods and information gathered from research, case studies, and program data, the role will inform people in the region and beyond about the challenges faced by adults with low literacy, always within budget. Additionally, the role will use the data to create messaging, including annual reports, program updates, fund appeals, social media engagement, events, and an engaging website. The Communications Director will present a professional, cohesive brand that seamlessly integrates fundraising and programmatic initiatives.
Mission Alignment
The Communications Director leads the development and execution of all communications strategies to enhance the visibility and impact of the Cape Fear Literacy Council. This role is crucial in promoting the mission of providing personalized education to adults, transforming lives, and contributing to a stronger community.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Communications Planning:
Develop, implement, and regularly update a comprehensive communications plan that aligns with and supports CFLC’s strategic objectives, particularly in integrating fundraising and programmatic initiatives.
Employ data-driven methods to refine communication strategies, utilizing research, case studies, and program data to identify trends and opportunities that enhance CFLC’s public image and support its mission.
Brand Management and Messaging:
Oversee and ensure the consistency of CFLC’s brand across all platforms, developing key messages that effectively communicate the value of CFLC’s learner-centered, high-quality programming.
Maintain a professional, cohesive brand presence, ensuring all communication materials across digital and print media uphold the organization’s standards and brand identity.
Content Development and Distribution:
Lead the creation and distribution of engaging and informative content that highlights the impact of CFLC’s programs, tailored to agreed-upon personas.
Manage the production and distribution of the organization’s newsletters and annual report, ensuring these materials communicate CFLC’s achievements and seamlessly integrate fundraising messages with program updates.
Digital and Social Media Management:
Maintain and enhance the organization’s online presence, ensuring the website and social media platforms are current, engaging, and reflect CFLC’s cohesive branding and messaging strategy.
Develop and implement digital campaigns that support both the Development Director’s initiatives and promote broad community awareness, ensuring these campaigns are strategically aligned with CFLC’s overall communication goals.
Public Relations and Media Outreach:
Foster relationships with media outlets to secure coverage that enhances CFLC’s community image and outreach.
Act as the primary point of media contact for CFLC, managing all media inquiries and public relations issues, and ensuring consistent, professional representation of the organization.
Event Communication Support:
Lead the strategic communication efforts for all fundraising and community events, creating and executing communication strategies that ensure alignment with CFLC’s financial goals and mission.
Provide comprehensive communication support for events, including managing the platforms for communicating with stakeholders, the creation of promotional materials, oversight of event messaging, and coordination of post-event communications to maximize engagement and impact.
Internal Communications:
Enhance internal communications to ensure all staff and volunteers are consistently informed, engaged, and motivated.
Develop and implement internal communications strategies that support organizational development and staff training, fostering a culture of high performance and continuous improvement.
Community Partnerships:
Actively support and collaborate with roles responsible for community partnerships, providing communication tools and participating in joint outreach initiatives.
Ensure that all partnership communications reinforce CFLC’s mission and strategic objectives, enhancing community.
Other Duties

Salary Range:
$45 – 55K, commensurate with experience
