Overview
Under general direction of the Public Services Manager, the person in this position is responsible for professional library work involving responsibility for various professional and instructional services in the public library system requiring knowledge of library principles, practices, and techniques. Work includes providing reference services which involves providing information literacy, reader's advisory and instruction to library staff and the public to effectively utilize print and electronic resources. Assignments are carried out under the direction of the Public Services Manager who reviews the work for conformance to established policies and standard professional practices.
In the event of a natural or man-made disaster that may threaten the area, the employee will be required to perform emergency duties as directed. Responsibilities
- Provide the full range of public service including circulation, reader's advisory and reference.
- Respond to in person, mail, telephone, IM, email requests for information and research at a public Information/Reference Desk.
- Provide roaming reference to be accessible to customers on the public service floor.
- Introduce patrons to reference books and tools and aid them in the use of the online catalog and databases.
- Aid patrons in the selection of books and other materials on special subjects or general fiction reading.
- Instruct the public and library staff system wide in the use of Library resources including the online catalog, databases and print resources.
- Maintain assigned area of the collection to ensure materials are organized and available for customers.
- Plan and conduct library tours, computer classes, programs and community outreach.
- Promote and inform the public about the full range of programs, resources and services provided by the library system.
- Communicate with the Collection Development department about areas of the collection that need to be reviewed including all areas of the print and electronic collection.
- Develop bibliographies and fliers in conjunction with the Library PR staff.
- Be responsible for the library and staff on evenings and weekends in the absence of professional division head.
- Train and supervise clerical, paraprofessional and subordinate professionals in specific tasks.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Librarian I - Digital Literacy Additional Duties
- Assist library patrons with utilizing various software packages, programs, computers and scanners, including, but not limited to: photo editing, sound recording, video production, internet chat/conferencing, and computer-aided drafting (CAD) software.
- Offer instruction to individuals and groups in intermediate to advanced-level computing techniques, including demonstration with cameras, smartphones, tablets, and other digital devices.
- Coordinate hands-on, technology learning opportunities for local business and organizations.
- Prepare and present on-going relevant hands-on technology training workshops for staff and volunteers.
- Coordinate, schedule, supervise, train, and motivate volunteers.
- Schedule speakers and teachers to conduct lectures and workshops in the idea lab.
- Identify community partners that will contribute time or content to the idea lab.
- Stay current and relate technology trends and their applications to the library system staff and the public.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of professional library principles, methods, procedures, and techniques.
- Knowledge of current literature, trends and developments in the field of library science appropriate to the areas of assignment.
- Ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Martin County Library System Customer Service Performance Standards.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, and other County employees.
- Knowledge of library reference materials and research techniques.
- Ability to work independently in a wide variety of situations.
- Able to utilize computer technology and software applications.
- Ability to remain flexible and adapt to a dynamic environment.
- Able to work a schedule that includes evenings and weekends.
Master's Degree in library science or Master's in Information Management or Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association. One (1) year of previous experience involving professional library work, which could include technical services and digital services as explained under Essential Function for each position. A comparable amount of education, training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications; library experience may substitute for degree on a year-for-year basis.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License.
