Senior Library Assistant
Title: Senior Library Assistant
Division: Provost's Office

Salary Range: Grade 5: $13.43/hour

Position Summary: The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for a Senior Library Assistant. This role involves overseeing checkout activities, providing excellent customer service, assisting with policy enforcement, and maintaining order in the library. The position requires working some weekend hours regularly.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Supervise student staff during weekend shifts; train students for weekend work.
- Support activities of the Rice Library Testing Center; proctor tests and provide clerical support following authorized procedures.
- Assist patrons with loan and return of library materials; help with library resources such as printers, computers, and media equipment.
- Guide patrons in navigating the library website and online resources like room reservations, catalog, and university information systems.
- Respond to library, campus, and community inquiries via phone, chat, or email, directing individuals appropriately.
- Conduct routine security checks; respond to alarms; help maintain quiet and order; inform the Circulation Manager of issues.
- Be trained in emergency procedures; act as essential personnel during campus closures or emergencies.
- Assist with maintenance of technology collections and perform simple repairs on laptops, tablets, and accessories.
- Participate in special projects related to checkout operations.
- Inspect collections for maintenance needs and assist with stack management.
- Provide backup staffing coverage as needed.
- Maintain physical space, including resetting furniture and signage.
- Serve on library or university committees.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- High school diploma.
- Ability to interpret and follow written and oral instructions.
- Strong judgment and decision-making skills for prioritizing tasks and policy judgment.
- Capability to handle high-pressure and emergency situations effectively.
- Adaptability and ability to cope with change.
Preferred Knowledge and Skills:
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- Experience in instructing on various details.
- Experience supervising individuals with differing abilities.
Work Hours/Travel:
- Standard 37.5 hours/week; hours vary during summers and holidays.
- Occasional overtime and weekend hours may be required.
