Position Summary
Reporting to the Audio-Visual Systems Manager, Audio Visual Technicians Level I will need to set up, operate, maintain and repair AV equipment used to enhance Museum events, such as projectors, TVs, microphones, DSPs, lighting and sound mixing equipment. They will support and maintain general technology-based exhibits as well as the Planetarium, AV systems and conference rooms with codecs and touch panels. They will also support digital signage and provide technical support for teleconferences, webinars, camps and distance-learning classes.

Key Duties And Responsibilities
- Maintain basic knowledge of AV systems, signal flow, and AV setups.
- Perform general maintenance and support of audio-visual equipment and lighting systems.
- Operate high-quality audio distribution, sound reinforcement/lighting systems in support of museum events.
- Operate high-quality video distribution through TV monitors and projectors in support of museum events.
- Setup, connect and monitor conferencing events.
- Setup, maintain and help in classroom events.
- Operate sound and lighting boards for the planetarium.
- Monitor AV Museum equipment during museum events set up and break down.
- Troubleshoot A/V equipment when there are technical questions or problems related to A/V equipment and identifying appropriate solutions.
- Troubleshoot technology exhibits running on Mac OSX and Windows-based computers throughout the Museum.
- Provide basic instruction on the operation of A/V equipment to customers as necessary.
- Operate and maintain daily audio-visual tasks.
- Maintain AV technician schedule including weekends.
- Maintain regular maintenance checks to all AV systems.
- Support the museum’s staff and clients in the use of the installed AV systems.
- Be on-call outside of normal working hours during production periods, and in emergency situations.
- Attend A/V staff meetings and training sessions.
- Undertake any other relevant activities which fall under the general scope of this position as directed by the Audio-Visual Manager and VP of Technology.
Minimum Job Qualifications/Education
- Minimum of 1 year experience.
- Associates or Technical Degree.
Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Ability to work flexible part-time hours including evenings and weekends.
- Ability to follow and understand signal flow.
- Support the AV and lighting rigging in a stage/theatre environment and lighting control experience.
- Computer hardware and software troubleshooting for Microsoft Windows and Apple OSX.
- Customer focused with the ability to deliver a high-quality service to customers.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures.
- Ability to follow directions on the fly.
- Support lighting systems, control apparatus, equipment and maintenance thereof.
- Ability to work as part of an existing team.
Audio Hardware Requirements
- A working knowledge of audio cables, Audio DSPs and Digital Mixing Consoles operational features.
- Applicant would need to know how to connect, load and save presets to all audio systems if an exhibition or an event would require any functional changes.
- Digital wireless microphone system setup and a basic knowledge of frequency spectrums if a visiting exhibition or event is carrying wireless microphones or similar equipment.
Video Hardware Requirements
- A working knowledge of projector operations, smart TV operations, HD cameras, HD cables, control systems, and wire management.
- A working knowledge of Crestron Touch Panel/iPad operation for the day-to-day running of the event and learning center spaces.
Lighting Hardware Requirements
- A working knowledge of professional moving head DMX controlled lighting fixtures and laser systems although specific laser control training is available online.
- Basic maintenance of moving head fixtures including gobo changing, lamp and effects wheel replacement.
- PC based DMX controllers for production setup and day-to-day control. Some production vendors may carry their own conventional DMX controlled lighting consoles so a knowledge of connectivity and setup of these consoles would be a benefit.
General Requirements
- As most AV systems are now IP based it would be beneficial for the applicant to have some basic networking knowledge for fault finding and hardware replacement scenarios.
Work Environment And Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear. Daily tasks require a variety of physical activities, related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, and reaching. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands and fingers to feel, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds on select occasions. Must be able to stand for long periods of time, move quickly from space to space to assist guests. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Work is normally performed in an interior environment. Some work from time-to-time will be in an exterior environment with exposure to climatic conditions. Schedule will include non-traditional hours, evenings, and weekends.
