The University of South Carolina’s Joseph F. Rice School of Law Library seeks a highly-motivated and service-oriented reference librarian to join the professional staff of an academic research library with the primary goal of supporting the work of the 50 faculty and over 640 students of the School of Law, but which also actively serves the University community, state government, the Bench and Bar, and the citizens of South Carolina.
The Reference and Faculty Services Librarian coordinates library services for all full-time and visiting faculty of the School of Law. As the library’s key faculty liaison, the incumbent is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, and administration of library services to faculty as part of the library’s charge to support the law school curriculum and the individual scholarly pursuits of law faculty. In this capacity, the Reference and Faculty Services Librarian develops outreach initiatives to introduce to faculty and educate them about library services.
The Reference and Faculty Services Librarian works with law school faculty to ascertain their individual research needs, to accurately formulate effective research methodologies and strategies for legal and multi-disciplinary research, and to efficiently and effectively consult on long-term faculty research projects. The Reference and Faculty Services Librarian may also fulfill research requests for discrete projects. The Reference and Faculty Services Librarian may hire, train, and supervise one or more student research assistants within the law library to assist in supporting faculty research requests. This position also works with individual faculty members’ student research assistants to train and orient them on resources and effective research techniques.
The Reference and Faculty Services Librarian will be available to teach in a required first-year legal research, analysis, and writing course or in advanced legal research courses.
The Reference and Faculty Services Librarian reports to the Associate Dean and Director of the Law Library and works closely with the other professional librarians.
Required Education And Experience
J.D. from an ABA accredited law school and M.L.S or its equivalent from an ALA accredited library school, or enrollment in an ALA accredited M.L.S. or equivalent degree granting program. At least one year of legal reference experience.
Preferred Qualifications
At least one year of legal reference experience in an academic law library; prior teaching experience, preferably in the legal education environment.
