About You
As the
Department Director of Communications , your passion for writing compelling content will inform and engage our members. You will be responsible for developing effective messaging and communication strategies within the Communications division to support TASB’s business and reputation as a leader in K-12 public education. In addition, you will manage a team of communications specialists who work with TASB’s programs and entities, in collaborations with designers and marketing specialists to plan and execute TASB’s Content Strategy and advance organizational goals.
This role is remote eligible to qualified candidates living outside of the Austin metro area, who reside in Texas.
A Typical DaySupervises and guides a team of communications specialists by overseeing performance, encouraging collaboration, and ensuring growth and development of each staff member.Creates smart, compelling content that may include web stories, magazine articles, video scripts, media statements, external and internal communiques, marketing material, social media, and advocacy campaigns.Collaborates across the organization to identify and develop content that drives member engagement.If you’re still reading, we’d love to meet you!How You’ll Make an Impact
Contributes to the success of the Communications division and the Communications, Marketing and Events service area by exhibiting excellent judgement, integrity, and responsibility while offering innovative solutions and a strategic mindset as part of the Association’s management team.Participate in the strategic planning for Communications and Marketing.Support copy editing support and perform quality assurance on communications specialist work – assessing for effectiveness, accuracy, style, consistency, and compliance.Serve as a liaison with key program areas to provide communications support and strategy to maximize business goals.Serve as a key member of the Communications and Marketing leadership team.Assist with special communications projects as assigned, including crisis communications, executive communications, organizational change management communications and media relations.Develop systems and processes to assist with content planning, creation, governance, and repurposing, including editorial timelines.Demonstrates effectiveness of communications by evaluating data and engagement across channels.Stay updated on the communication’s best practices through research and professional development, with continual training on new tools and strategies.Skills For Success
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, or related field.Minimum of 5-10 years relevant work experience as a writer/editor in communications, public education, or journalism environment.Five years of management experience.Minimum 5-7 years relevant work experience developing K-12 content.Minimum five years relevant work experience in K-12 public education.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to supervise and manager a team.Ability to develop and manage comprehensive communications plans and crisis communications scenarios.Must have exceptional writing and editing skills, including the ability to explain complicated K-12 public education issues to a general audience.Ability to thoroughly understand the different writing styles appropriate for websites, video scripts, reports, editorial, marketing, speeches, and other media.Highly collaborate, team-oriented, and strong consensus builder with confidence in interaction with senior stakeholders is required.Ability to work well under deadline pressure to execute effectively on multiple projects.Ability to develop and execute on content marketing initiatives to position TASB and its leaders as experts in K-1s public education and school board governance.Ability to develop processes for continuous improvement in editorial planning to ensure alignment with business goals.The TASB Difference
