About the Coastal Watershed Council:
The Coastal Watershed Council (CWC) is a dynamic and growing non-profit based in Santa Cruz, CA, working to transform the lower San Lorenzo River into a community destination by inspiring people to explore, enhance and protect this critical natural resource. When people care for the river, learn about its significance and build a connection to nature, it benefits the river ecosystem and the community we serve.
About the Project:
CWC has received a Coastal Stories grant from the California State Coastal Conservancy that aims to make the outdoors more inclusive and welcoming for all Californians through storytelling. The purpose of the project is to increase the representation of Indigenous, Chinese, and Latinae communities in public spaces in Santa Cruz, CA, through multimedia storytelling that enhances the educational impact of three existing public art installations near the San Lorenzo River. CWC will plan, design, and implement two physical interpretive signs with permanent QR codes linking to video and web content, which will be placed at the Chinatown Bridge and in Poet’s Park in the City of Santa Cruz.
CWC is seeking a videographer to produce at least two ~10 minute storytelling videos for this project. The videos will include interviews with members of the Amah Mutsun, Chinese American, and Latinae communities historically or currently present in Santa Cruz, and will provide context for three existing public art pieces: 1) the Chinatown Bridge Monument on a pedestrian bridge over the San Lorenzo River, 2) the Aulintak storm drain mural in Poet’s Park, and 3) the Tlāloc storm drain mural in Beach Flats Park.
Project Team:
CWC’s Communications Manager is leading community engagement around this project, including the identification of storytellers. Other project partners include the 418 Project and mural artist Irene Juarez O’Connell. The videographer will work closely with CWC’s Communications manager to plan and conduct the community interviews together, and to coordinate the completion of video deliverables.
