Essential Job Functions
The Social Media Specialist is a highly organized team player whose responsibilities revolve around growing Zoo New England’s storytelling capacity and cultivating its social media communities. This individual reports to the Social Media Manager within the Marketing and Communications department. Main responsibilities include brainstorming and maintaining content calendar, supporting and executing content marketing efforts on social media, digital asset management and social media community engagement. This role is a key player helping to grow the Zoo’s social media capacity, continuously improving the quality, quantity, and performance of our content while raising awareness of the Zoo’s mission, ongoing events and other initiatives.
The Social Media Specialist is eager to learn about the Zoos, its residents and international conservation efforts as well as make connections with colleagues in the many departments served by the Marketing and Communications team. The candidate must be adept at utilizing Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, TikTok and LinkedIn for storytelling and meeting business objectives, as well as have a firm understanding of each platform’s analytics and reporting. The ideal candidate is creative, highly organized, on top of trends, yet also understands what it means to represent a brand across social media platforms.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Working collaboratively with the Social Media Manager to execute the strategic social media plan to increase Zoo New England’s visibility and engagement among a variety of target audiences.
- Draft high-quality multi-media social posts tailored to audiences and platforms as assigned.
- Work across multiple social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, TikTok, LinkedIn), as well as record and respond to metrics and analytics.
- Respond to online community questions, comments and messages in a timely manner.
- Organize and catalogue social media digital photo and video assets for Marketing team.
- Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications team to plan and maintain social media content calendar.
- Monitor for social media trends that are appropriate and feasible to execute quickly.
- Demonstrate a keen awareness of current events, news, and trends that can impact our public messaging or be leveraged to engage target audiences.
- Attend and document events and other activities to develop and create social content.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, public relations, journalism or similar focus with 2-4+ years of experience.
- Experience with social media ecosystems, including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Threads, LinkedIn, Bluesky and X.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365, Adobe Creative Cloud, Sprout Social, Dropbox, and other tools such as content management systems, analytics tools, etc.
- Basic photography, design, audio and video editing skills.
- Must be highly organized and self-motivated.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing responsibilities and trends.
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
- Extreme attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Sound judgement.
- Ability to travel between Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo.
Preferred Job Requirements
- Experience working for a non-profit and/or cultural attraction.
- Knowledge of wildlife, environmental and conservation issues highly desirable.
Hours: This is an onsite position. The Social Media Specialist’s typical scheduled hours will be Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Due to the nature of the position, there will be times when the Social Media Specialist will be required to work early mornings and evenings to document events, monitor and respond on the various social media channels.
