The Technical Director is responsible for overseeing all technical operations of the fleet, ensuring vessels are maintained and operated safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with international maritime regulations. This leadership role involves strategic planning, budgeting, team management, and technical oversight to optimize fleet performance and reliability.
Key Responsibilities: Fleet Management: Oversee technical operations for all vessels owned by the company.
Ensure optimal vessel performance, availability, and compliance.
Monitor and manage drydockings, repairs, and maintenance schedules.
Implement and enforce preventative maintenance programs.
Regulatory Compliance & Safety: Ensure all vessels comply with international maritime regulations (IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM, etc.) and flag state requirements.
Liaise with classification societies, port state control, and flag state authorities.
Promote a strong safety culture across the fleet.
Budget & Cost Control: Prepare and manage the technical budget for the fleet, including OPEX and CAPEX.
Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising safety or compliance.
Approve technical procurement and major repair expenditures.
Leadership & Team Management: Lead and manage the technical department, including superintendents, engineers, and support staff.
Provide training and development for the technical team.
Conduct performance reviews and ensure department objectives are met.
Strategic Planning: Contribute to the company’s strategic direction with respect to fleet development, sustainability, and technology.
Advise senior management on technical risks and investment opportunities.
Lead decarbonization and digitalization initiatives within the fleet.
Stakeholder Engagement: Work closely with other departments including Operations, Chartering, Crewing, and Finance.
Maintain relationships with shipyards, suppliers, service providers, and regulatory bodies.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or equivalent.
Chief Engineer license or similar professional marine qualification is preferred.
Minimum 10 years’ experience in ship management or technical operations.
Strong knowledge of maritime regulations, class requirements, and technical standards.
Proven leadership and people management skills.
Excellent communication and organizational abilities.
Ability to travel internationally as needed.
Preferred Skills: Experience with a mixed fleet (tankers, bulk carriers, containers, etc.).
Knowledge of planned maintenance systems (PMS) and fleet management software.
Familiarity with sustainability practices and energy efficiency in shipping.
