Director of Public & Media Relations

If so, the client is looking for a Director of Public & Media Relations to lead high-profile communication initiatives and drive national and regional visibility for the university.
About the Role
As the Director of Public & Media Relations, you will be at the forefront of the university’s public image. You’ll cultivate relationships with journalists, oversee editorial content across print, digital, and social media platforms, and work closely with leadership to craft compelling stories that showcase the university’s excellence.
Your mission? To amplify the university’s voice, ensure brand consistency, and strategically position La Verne as a leader in education.
Key Responsibilities:
- Media & Public Relations (20%) – Develop and execute media strategies that enhance the university’s reputation, working closely with local, regional, and national news outlets.
- Storytelling & Editorial Leadership (20%) – Serve as the university’s chief storyteller, curating and producing engaging content for the website, social media, press releases, and the university magazine, Voice.
- Media Engagement & Visibility (15%) – Collaborate with internal partners to generate news coverage, build relationships with journalists, and position the university as a thought leader.
- Social Media Strategy (15%) – Oversee the university’s social media presence, ensuring content aligns with the overall branding and engagement strategy.
- Internal Communications (5%) – Develop strategic communication plans for faculty, staff, and students to keep them informed and engaged.
- Executive Communications (5%) – Craft speeches, newsletters, and social media content for the university president and other executives.
- Crisis Communications (5%) – Act as a key player in the university’s crisis communication team, serving as a Public Information Officer when needed.
- Subject Matter Expert Database (5%) – Manage a database of university experts to facilitate media interviews and thought leadership opportunities.
- Strategic Leadership (5%) – Play an integral role in the Office of Strategic Communications leadership team, influencing big-picture decision-making.
- Brand & Editorial Oversight (5%) – Ensure all university communications align with brand identity, tone, and style guidelines.
- Diversity & Inclusion – Actively participate in mandatory diversity and inclusivity training.
- Other duties as assigned.
What We’re Looking For
- 7+ years in media/public relations with increasing responsibility.
- 5+ years executing multi-channel PR strategies that drive measurable success.
- 3+ years managing and supporting staff members.
- Proven success leading communications in a complex, deadline-driven, and team-oriented environment.
- Experience in print publishing, including overseeing magazine production.
- Strong media relations and crisis communication expertise.
- Superior writing and copy-editing skills across multiple formats.
- Exceptional strategic planning and resource management abilities.
- Top-notch interpersonal, oral, and public speaking skills.
- Ability to craft and execute impactful communication plans.
- Familiarity with local and national media landscapes.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in higher education communications.
- Expertise in content marketing strategies.
- Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) is a plus.
- A graduate degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.
