This part-time, 20-hour-per-week position at Grand Rapids Public Library involves general cleaning and maintenance of facilities as directed by the Library Facilities Manager. The position requires the ability to travel to different library branches in the city of Grand Rapids.
This position has the following schedule:
Sundays are required once a month between September and May
Examples of work:
- Vacuums, sweeps, dusts, and cleans library facilities; maintains hard-surfaced and carpeted flooring. Other responsibilities include such tasks as replacing light bulbs, emptying trash containers, maintaining rest rooms, and maintenance of custodial equipment.
- Loads and unloads supplies, materials, and equipment; operates vacuum cleaners, buffers and related cleaning equipment.
- Assists in opening, closing, and securing buildings.
- Removes litter from grounds and removes snow from areas not cleared by snow plows.
- Assembles items such as furniture; paints; performs minor repairs of carpentry, cement, and mechanical systems of buildings.
- Performs other tasks of a similar nature as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
- High school degree or GED required.
- Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license and vehicle insurance is required.
- 2 years experience in custodial work; any equivalent combination of training and experience preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish is preferred.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Ability to:
- Read and follow written and oral instructions.
- Operate such equipment as a vacuum cleaner, buffer, lawn mower, and weed eater.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with the public and other employees.
- Sit or stand for extended periods of time in the performance of the duties associated with this position.
- Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance.
- Knowledge of:
- Current building cleaning and maintenance practices.
- Safety standards and regulations pertaining to cleaning and maintenance of buildings and grounds.
