Teacher of the Visually Impaired
Position: 10 month, Full time
Reports to: Coordinator of Specialized Programs, EC Director
QualificationsNorth Carolina licensure or certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI)Special Education background is preferredExperience working with visually impaired students, preferably in an educational settingStrong knowledge of adaptive techniques, assistive technology, and instructional strategies for students with visual impairmentsEffective communication and collaboration skills to work closely with students, parents, educators, and colleagues
ResponsibilitiesProvide Visual Impairment (VI) Services as described by DPI Guidelines for Exceptional ChildrenConduct comprehensive assessments to understand the visual needs and learning preferences of the student including generating professional evaluation reportsDevelop and implement individualized educational plans that address the unique needs and goals of the studentArticulate the needs and interventions of students in IEP meetings both verbally and in IEP database systemsProvide direct instruction and support to the visually impaired student, utilizing appropriate adaptive techniques and toolsCollaborate with classroom teachers, parents, and other professionals to ensure the student's needs are met effectivelyProvide guidance and support to other school staff to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment with access to instructionAdapt and modify educational materials to accommodate the student's visual impairmentWork in collaboration with other staff members to ensure the student's successUnderstanding of Regular Curriculum and Extended Content Curriculum, Grades K-12Document services provided including attending, direction instruction content, and student response to instructionProvide progress reports as required by the IEPDocument services provided including attending, direction instruction content, and student response to instructionMaintain VI equipment, provide inventory updates, and ensure that broken devices are repairedAbility to travel between school locationsPhysical requirement: Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs, etc. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Due to amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Light Work
